Facebook Tests Pinterest-Style Feature Called ’Collections’ (9 posts)

  • I read this article about Facebook trying out a new feature called “Collections”. Just wondering what you thought about it. Do you think it will be a good tool for business pages? Is it a threat to Pinterest?

  • @mholandez Interesting article. I don’t think this new Facebook really is a threat to Pinterest. It looks like it mainly is for retailers with physical products, whereas anything can be pinned on Pinterest and promoted, even a blog. I guess we’ll see how it rolls out as it gets released on a wider basis. Thanks for sharing the article.

  • @dianebianchi no problem! Thank you for your feedback. I agree with you, as far as giving pinterest a run for its money. I personally like the pinterest layout style, and now that Facebook & the new Myspace are adopting a similar layout, I am wondering who else will use this.

  • @mholandez Yes, Pinterest has definitely started a trend!

  • @mholandez All I know is that I am VERY grateful for this mass change! I like working with a grid-style blog or website and have been jumping through hoops and pulling teeth trying to make responsive grid-styles work in places that were never meant to respond, lol!

So I for one just LOVE the fact most major sites are responding to this trend. It makes layout so much more visually appealing and harder to screw up, even when you have no artistic talent whatsoever.

Yahoozie for Pinterest! Just love the look!

  • I don’t think this tool would replace Pinterest. I like it because for FB pages it could be a great opportunity to increase their fan base and reach. It’s a kind of ‘recommendation’ if someone likes your product. And as for the friends of fans, they know what to give as a birthday present ;-)

  • very interesting..and i  could  see it taking off……but not   really like  pinterest….to me anyway pinterest isnt mailnly  a shopping  place….  its more about a life  scrapbook….  about me  not what pottery barn wants to sell me….i have  stuff on there i  already   love..like music or  views of the world or frogs…. not  just stuff to  buy….

i wish  everyplace had one click  buying tho….now that would  be   fabulous….

  • Thank You everyone for your thoughts!

Ann, glad you brought up the pinterest-shopping place link, as that reminded me of why I think Pinterest WILL get bigger and better, despite my previous fears of a copyright meltdown at some point.

As I was wracking my brain and pushing my nerves past the brink trying to find NEW and different and PRETTY pictures to use on Pinterest, without having to pay for them but still being upright and legal… it dawned on me a never-ending supply of pictures I could use WITH permission… if I would just sign up as an affiliate. Then I could pick and choose without remorse or lawsuit. And after I thought more about that and started to poke around a bit, I must say I noticed that the prettiest pictures you’ll find are often straight from a wealthy manufacturer whose paid for quality photos to promote their commercial products, brands, and endeavors. A perfect supplier of a bottomless pit of “copyrighted” photos who never mind if I use them without payment.

Aha! I know there are still limitations, but give me one quality image for free and I can turn that thing into 50 different quality images and produce 100 videos in one hour. I can be a busy little be with a good image, lol! And I have NEVER been told by a product developer or manufacturer that I could NOT use their photo collection to promote their products.

Now… how you use those copyrighted photos, make Pinterest happy, make the product owner happy, and not blatantly get in your reader’s/viewers’/friends’ faces in a way that tics them off is… well… an art.

But it really is a great resource of free, usable, endless supply of quality images… if you’ll just agree to use them, deliver your message, make everyone happy, and sell something all at the same time.

    Just my thoughts…
