Facebook Starts Sending Out Notices for Sponsored Stories Settlement (3 posts)

  • Here’s the story from Mashable: http://goo.gl/avM74

My outrage is not with the settlement. Three weeks ago Instagram, a company that was recently bought by Facebook for 715 million dollars announced a change in their TOS allowing them charge for ads without remunerating people who may appear in the ads.
Did no one at Facebook tell any one at Instagram about this class action law suit that basically says Facebook agreed to pay 20 million (pocket change for Z) for having done this? Or is Facebook growing up like and taking a que from BofA who writes a check for a 4 billion fine for money laundering that “they had no idea was going on” but had made so much in profits the fine was minor collateral?
Sometime I just gotta rant but – we’re evaluating ramping up our ad spend on FB to 1 – $3,000 per month going into spring – with a company who may turn our ads into evidence in a class action suit. Is Facebook management stupid, naive or smart like fox?

  • I really hope Instagram changes some of it’s terms from their new approach @mitch-rezman
To me, I think the “social proof” in ads is a double edged sword – it works well to catch your eye when you see your friend likes a page but I do feel like it’s an invasion of privacy since you can’t hide that information and you can’t see who likes a Page from the Page itself.  So technically, that information could be private.  I have some clients who work with sensitive topics and they struggle with the fact that if they show an ad, they don’t want the “social proof” in case someone gets angry that it is displayed.
Other than that, I don’t have any good thoughts about how Instagram is approaching this issue :)

  • doesn’t that beg the question “who’s running Instagram?” @Andrea Vahl At least with google, regardless of their acquisition, it was always about “improved search” and there’s always been a set of “rules”. Instagram, with Facebook’s blessing is saying give me your advertising money, by the way the folks in the ad we’re selling of yours may file a class-action suit against us but don’t worry about it, just count all the eyeballs on your ad. Not looking for a reply just trying to figure all this out
