Facebook started cracking down on fake likes! Big brands, biggest looser! (7 posts)

  • As declared earlier, facebook finally started cracking down on fake likes from pages. However, there were rumors in social media world regarding what action facebook would take if it found such fake likes on pages. While many said it will block the page, many believed that facebook would not ban the page but will discount such fake likes from the page. And has the action starts, we have learnt that facebook has just discounted likes from page instead of banning the entire page.
But biggest surprise comes in when we learned that biggest losers of this crackdown are not those fake, suspicious pages but some of the biggest brands!Check out for the biggest losers at http://www.businessinsider.com/these-20-brands-lost-the-most-facebook-likes-the-day-of-the-fake-fan-purge-2012-10#

  • I’m so glad they are doing this, @moinshaikh- That is interesting to see the brands that suffered!

  • @moinshaikh Great share, Moin! I’ll be watching how this pans out in the future. I don’t think they’re done yet… and can’t believe they’ll just let the pages off the hook without some kind of slap on the wrist. I think the other shoe has just not dropped yet. Meaning… it’s not over yet!

    Just my thoughts…

@andrea-vahl And Andrea, I’m glad SME shut down their mutual “like” society, lol. Looking at all those numbers of folks who jumped in, I was biting my lip… wanting to join in sooooo badly… but knowing there would be a very bad backlash at some point… so I never jumped in. I still think that day is coming.

I think the funniest statistic, however, was the 124,919 likes that Facebook lost in that one day. Too funny! I mean… why in the world would Facebook have fake likes? It was their purge and they end up #1 abuser? Mind boggling…

  • @atlantarobin .  I think the owners of the Fake accounts also like a lot of other Pages to “appear” legitimate.  I don’t think that Facebook participated in that themselves of course or that McDonalds or any of those pages would do that – hopefully!

  • @andrea-vahl   Yes, Andrea, that’s what I assumed, too. Fraudsters love to drag everyone else down with them. Makes them look better, I think… or not as bad. That’s the trouble with black hat / gray hat / fuzzy hat. It’s too easy to just go color blind after a while and not be able to tell the difference anymore.

Did anyone say how they caught on to the fake likes? Did they trace them back the same way they did the paid link networks last winter? That would be my guess.

  • We lost 600-700 fans per day on the 28th, 29th and 30th then dropped back down to normal (around 100 per day). This must have been the fake like removal as the dates seem to match up.
As @andrea-vahl says, fans are not always bought by that page and could simply be people trying to look legit, as I can assure you my page has never bought any likes at all, whether these be legit fans or fake ones.
