Facebook Social Reach and Shortstack (16 posts)

  • Hello Everyone,

Would there be any reason why our pages social reach would go down after adding tabs to our page? We have had the number of people talking about our page going up, the number of people engaging with our content going up, but our social reach has tanked (from over 50k two weeks ago, to struggling to hit 700 or so the past few days).

This is concerning. We’re using Shortstack to build our tabs. Has anyone else noticed this trend?

    Jason

  • @jasonreilly Hi Jason

I don’t think the two would be related.

Are you running the same ads? Using the same destination pages?

    Russell

  • I don’t see any reason for this either, @jasonreilly.  But I have seen some strange things as far as statistics on Pages.  Some pages Talking About This numbers are going down and some people are even saying conspiracy so that Pages will be forced to pay for exposure.
I don’t think that is the case, but sometimes it could just be a glitch in the reporting.  Are you getting engagement?

  • @andrea-vahl You make a very good point, and it brings about a question I’ve been meaning to ask on the Forum.

What do you consider to be a Good percentage of fan engagements on a post?

I’m aware that according to Facebook, only 16% of the fans could actually see a page’s post, but I wonder if there’s any data out there, or at least some general thoughts on what would be a good percentage of engagements on a post.

    Thank you in advance :)

  • From what I’ve seen out there the pages that have engaged fans have a Talking About This percentage of between 2-5%.  That is, take the Talking About This number and divide it by the total fans.

This can vary depending on the size of the page.  The larger pages can have a little more of a challenge getting to these numbers but it is being done.  I’ve also seen Pages with 10% which is really good but usually those are pages with less than 10,000 fans.    Hope that helps, @alexandrapotora!

  • @andrea-vahl @alexandrapotora @russellallert

Thank you all. I will explain to my manager that what we’re seeing has happened to others and isn’t something that seems to make sense. Our engagement and “likes” is going up, but our engagement took a nose dive, so we were scratching our heads.

    Thank you again!

    Jason

  • @andrea-vahl thank you so much, we are definitely on the same page. This client wants everything in black in white which can sometimes be difficult.. do you know of any study, or article that I can reference online stating this? Thank you so much btw, I really appreciate your help :)

@jasonreilly Absolutely! You can show him an article like this one in Techchrunch: http://techcrunch.com/2012/02/29/facebook-post-reach-16-friends/ talking about posts reaching only 16% of fans in general.

I found that it’s easy to explain if you compare it to an email distribution. You have 20,000 emails, but only a percentage will be opened. From that %, another small percentage will take the call to action you ask for in that email. Same goes for the posts and the engagements.

    Thank you guys!!

  • @alexandrapotora Comparing it to email marketing or even telemarketing is accurate. Only so many people will even pick up the phone, let alone take your call, let alone take action. Percentages of percentages of percentages.

Unfortunately, despite living in the real world, a number of feel that their interpretations are still more accurate. I miss self-employment! :)

  • @jasonreilly I’m self employed and now I have clients like that :D #cycle

    Glad we connected

  • Hi folks, I just wanted to weigh in on percentages.  Back in the old days before the internet even, we would pass out flyers and mail brochures.  If you received a 10% return on your “Call now” c-t-a you were doing spectacular.  So if that 16% are actually taking action, you are doing very well.  The best part about incorporating social media into the mix is that, if you are able to accomplish it yourself or with a staff member you already pay, it is much more cost effective than mailers, phone calls or most other forms of advertising.

  • I’ve had emails from fb saying my page numbers were way higher than they could have been, for instance a page that was never advertised, only has 2 likes and, I get an email saying it has 4500+ views in the past week.

Additionally, Ive noticed that sometimes it is very difficult to tag a page into a post, which makes me wonder if that is why numbers are going down on Talking About This.

  • I’m following this carefully and tracking engagement. I’m going to keep testing and tweaking and see what I notice. Thank you all very much for your feedback. It is greatly appreciated.

  • @deereinhardt Nice comparison, Dee.

  • Thanks @russllallert!  Sometimes it pays to be old!

  • @deereinhardt that’s a really good comparison -and no, you’re Not old-!! :)
The 16% is the percentage of the total number of fans, Facebook says will see a post. As with any return, that post won’t get 100% engagement, so there’s a percentage of a percentage situation here.

@marygreen What you’re saying is really interesting. The email you’re referencing, is it the weekly page performance email that Facebook sends out to admins?

  • Lately, FB has been slow to update stats such as “Friends who like this page”. In some cases, it’s taken days for stats to update accurately. Perhaps this recent trend is responsible for the drop off you’ve noticed.

Right now, I’ve got 100% talking about this. That seems unlikely.
