Facebook & Small Business Tips (13 posts)

  • For those using Facebook for Small Business (Yes, I know this works in Small Business and Facebook Groups) I came across this article with tips for how Small Businesses can use Facebook:  http://mashable.com/2012/02/20/facebook-marketing-small-business/

    I thought it would be valuable information to share with my fellow campers. Have any of you followed these tips in your Facebook activities?  @Deairby do you have any insights to share?

    Of those the article listed I would warn against number 2 and number 8.

    The former as there is evidence to suggest that Facebook penalizes posts from third-party software in their Edgerank system. Always post on Facebook directly.

    The latter because it really is a waste of time. Very few people bother with QR codes.

  • @russellallert Thank you for your input! I was hoping for such discussion. 

    I have also heard of third-party postings affecting edgerank and have reduced the amount of Facebook posting from Hootsuite and began posting organically from within Facebook more often.

    I think QR Code use really depends on the business. On our printed materials and some business cards we gain engagement through the QR Codes being scanned. This also helps because it is the Prospective Students whom we hope to be engaged on Facebook and the QR Codes drive this. I would be curious if others have input on QR Code use?

    Where are you from? QR codes are pretty much dead here in Australia, which is where my experience of them is based. Very few people use them.

    Whether this is because of poor use by businesses or just a lack of understanding, or both, I am not sure.

  • @alexandrabriggs Thanks for posting this article in the facebook club. I used to be part of the small business club but found my inbox unmanageable so I have dropped that club for the time being.

  • @alexandrabriggs thank you for posting the article. I agree 1000% with @russellallert QR codes will have a very short lifespan in the US too. Since Facebook is cracking down on using FB functionalities as means to participate in giveaways/campaigns, I would say that apps are among the Most important from that list. Ads… ehh… I’ve tried multiple avenues, and still haven’t found them to be more efficient then the ‘world of mouth’ traveling around by using apps.

    One of the most important things, that ironically wasn’t listed there is Content. I say this over and over again, but Content IS king. Generating consistent content that is high in virality, combined with the right use of apps, will be your asset. Local content & use of keywords of course can also add to the pot, and measuring is vital. Use your insights!

  • @russellallert I am in the US and in the education field. It could be that our customer base is so heavily involved in technology that we have high adaptation with QR Codes. It does truly depend on the business in my opinion.

  • @alexandrabriggs, I’m not saying you can’t use QR codes for your specific business but i feel the time will come where QR codes will be replaced by what is called MVS aka Mobile Visual Search. Read this article from mashable ; http://mashable.com/2012/02/15/qr-codes-rip/
