Facebook revamping privacy setting and other features. (14 posts)

  • Don’t know if anyone else has come up to this or not, but starting yesterday (wednesday, 12.12.12), facebook has started rolling out its new, revamped privacy setting menu, activity log, tag removal request tool and apps request interface. The revamp is expected to be rolled out to all users by the end of the year. You can read more about it on http://www.intesols.com.au/cgblog/48/217/Facebook-goes-for-major-revamp-Redesigns-privacy-settings-and-activity-log.html or can google it!!

  • Thank you for sharing this @moinshaikh! That is a great demonstration of the changes!

  • @moinshaikh I just read Mashable’s brief. I’m not keen on being searched but guess I can ignore more requests (my personal page is family & close(r) friends). Otherwise the changes don’t seem life shattering.

Mashable mentioned that Facebook tried to get users’ attention by allowing them to vote; however, the “apathetic” response nixed the idea.

  • @moinshaikh Thanks for the update.

  • @alexandrabriggs @kc_kreative Yup! Its really great demonstration of the changes, but the only concern is the elimination of preventing yourself from appearing in search box. However, as you said Kristy, we can ignore requests so it is not going to be very big concern but still it will create fuss among shy community of fb users ;) . And even if users would have paid high attention to the voting, i am not sure if facebook would agree to majority of the voters. Well, that’s not important now as the voting is closed and decision has been taken. Let’s see how it goes with the new interface designs.Thank you!

  • @moinshaikh I am also concerned about the elimination of privacy locks on the search box. There are some people I would prefer never to find me on Facebook. I hope that they don’t lift other restrictions we have in place like hiding friends lists, etc.

  • @alexandrabriggs If you’re a battered women, I guess you cannot be on Facebook now – at least with your real name. Do we know how much information if revealed about us in a search? Just our name or more than that?  cc: @moinshaikh

  • @alexandrabriggs You are right! Let’s hope the friend list privacy and other secret tools shy people do use because i am one of them and am very much disappointed  with the facebook’s latest privacy setting updates which will not allow us to hide ourselves in search result :(

  • So does this preclude Bing from showing a profile on Bing search results (Bing now serves up “social connections” with every search) because as I see it the privacy agreement is between me and Facebook not me and the World Wide Web.

    caveat

In that I just deployed a boat load of 301 redirects for links that JUST showed up in Google Webmaster Tools from an eCommerce platform we abandoned in 2004 do you think Sergy and Larry just sit around and snicker every time Facebook rolls out more “privacy settings”?

  • @moin-shaikh If you don”t want to be found you shouldn’t be on Facebook :-)

  • @mitch-rezman Can’t say anything right now, but looking at recent happenings at both facebook and bing, may be fb will make facebook users appear in bing search and as you said bing’s social connection is already out in the market and hence it will be very hard to believe that facebook will be still a privacy pro place; correct you said, if you don’t want to be found, you shouldn’t be on Facebook!

  • Currently with certain search terms on Bing, several “experts” will have their FB profiles pop up on the right column of Bing search results. I don’t know that many people realize how close Bing & Facebook are tied. Infamous Facebook  ”hackathons” where Facebook coders have 24 hours to produce new breakthrough coding ideas have of late been inviting teams from Microsoft to join in with Mark Z personally over seeing the events. There’s no dynamic leadership at Microsoft right now and it seems as though the Zuck is helping them fill the void.  Ergo the rapid ongoing metamorphosis of G+
