Facebook recommend button – wrong URL, please help! (8 posts)

Topic tags: Integration, recommend
  • hi, we launched our wordpress site today that we’ve been working on for a year.  there is a Facebook recommend button on the very top of the site, i think its not in wordpress actually but somehow with the hosting servers or something. Anyway. the recommend button links to the url .com/log-in.php so everyone on Facebook only sees the log in screen. I can’t found anywhere how to change the URL. we had a plug in up for a year that forced it to the log in screen, so either that has something to do with it or when it was set up, the guy put that there so no one accidentally saw the site before launch.  can someone please help! thanks!

  • @jonnymacintosh can you share the link to the page you are referring to

  • That’s very interesting. I couldn’t see where it was grabbing “Log In” from the source code either.

What I did see was that you don’t have any of your meta tags filled in. The best way to communicate what you want included in posts to FB is by using Open Graph protocol, but if that’s not present in the code they’ll pick up the information provided in your title and description meta tags—which are empty on your site.

I hand code this stuff into my sites, but I’m sure there are WP plugins that can help you with open graph. A great plugin to help you with the meta tags is All in One SEO Pack Just implementing that may resolve your issue.

  • where can i put in the meta tags by hand?

  • It doesn’t really work that way because every page uses the same template for the header information. If you look in your theme folder

    public_html >> wp-content >>themes >> mytheme
    You should find header.php

Inside this are the tags, but they should also be set up with conditions to accommodate whatever page renders in the browser.  If you are not familiar with HTML and PHP I would suggest you install the All in one SEO Pack.

Did you create the theme you’re using or purchase it?

  • Did you resolve this because everything is working fine when I liked and recommended it.  Maybe because I was already logged into FB?  If you’re not logged in to FB, these buttons always go to the login first.

  • @ndonelly It is working better, no more “log in…” text, but the title and description tags are still empty.
