facebook problems…. (12 posts)

  • facebook has  been  good  for sure   for our business….but its  brought problems too…we are so easy to talk to now and they are asking for lots of things we dont offer….like  taking  pictures and measurements  of things that we  dont offer to do, ….they  thnk since we have a camera and people that we can do all the stuff   zappos  does for them..whats  easy for some is way too   hard  for us…..

im trying to figure out how  to  say no in a nice way….i just want to offer what i want to offer…….we have our  reasons…

  • In reply to @annfurnivall Ann at Greenoak…. I recommend the straight forward approach…. ‘only what is available on our website’  (or Facebook page, etc.)

You could have a Services Offered page – - and simply refer them to the page.  Hopefully, they might read it before they ask the question.

Sounds like Facebook has created the ‘Oprah Syndrome’ for your business!  Best of luck with this, and I would love to hear how you resolve this issue.  You never want to say no – but sometimes, you have to figure out where you’re going to draw the line.

  • @melowout … you are so right….  i just   need  to  find  a  good  way to do it  where they would see the rules…..  the notes maybe….in the  conversations maybe….

  • @annfurnivall How about pinning a post to the top – which includes a link to the Services provided?  You could also put the link in your ‘About’ section in case they are checking that out too.

  • thanks melodie….thats  pretty  good  real estate ….if   they even go to   the  facebook page….i think i read   that hardly any fans  actually   go to our pages…meaning its all about their timeline….

….. we  dont have  very strict rules  tho…if  someone has  bought tons from us i would  take a picture….and   some things   are  borderline….some  days we are businer…..  im  thinkging  about a  nice general note…

  • @annfurnivall What about doing a quick video or blog post about why you do what you do. Giving a quick walkthrough on why specific requests cannot be accommodated by sharing what you ARE spending your time on could give a different viewpoint that provokes understanding

  • @alexandrabriggs that  would probably  be  best, a  big post,  not on the blog  but on  the facebook….since thats where  most of the  requests  come…..or a p.s. in a  monthly email….i sure dont want to get the  idea of us   not  cooperating   in their  heads…..  andi  dont  really want to offer  unlimited photo service, or much photo service at all…. alexAndra, its  the  girls  from  your  direction [carmel] who are the   worst…lol  ….they  must  think  everyone  does whatever  nordstroms  does…..

  • Ann, I have a similar problem in my page. I sell things I buy from Asia, in Chile not everyone knows how I do that so now, because I’m always friendly in my page they stared asking me from where I buy my products, how can they buy online?, how do  they use paypal? hahaha. I don’t have problems teaching people how to buy from ebay for example but I can’t tell people my providers, I would loose business. But it’s so hard to tell no without sounding.. well, mean and selfish hahaha…

  • @hytare i have the same problem…. they will ask where i got something….i just  say at the show..or  something  else kind of  vague….. and hope they  get then hint that im  not  going to tell them….its a pretty rude  question  …but  maybe innocent…

  • I know exactly how you feel hahaha. Sometimes I can tell it’s quite innocent, but sometimes… it’s just plain rude. I have been asked a few times how did I open my store, how do I sell, where do I get my products and how can they buy online…basically, asking me to teach them to open a store and sell the same things I do and… just make my loose business… that just… not nice hahaha

  • That is a difficult problem @annfurnivall but a good one in a way – it shows people are comfortable with you!  Maybe you could put your “guidelines” in a Facebook Note that you could link to as your answer.  A very nice “we would love to accommodate your request for measurements and individual pictures but  we can’t” type of thing.
And yes it is frustrating when people want to “pick your brain” about all the ins and outs of your business @hytare – I think you are right, innocent in a way.  Maybe you can tell them you will “consult with them to teach them how to do it for x amount”  And make the x number quite high :)
