Facebook Places – Has anyone else run into this problem? (5 posts)

  • Currently, I am the Social Media Manager for a non-chain restaurant in PA. I’ve been updating and monitoring their social media outlets for about 6 months and have been doing alright with conversions and growth. Recently, we’ve run into some problems with Facebook.

The account itself was set up by someone else long before I took over the account. This person created a profile page before the business page became more popular and eventually created a business page to accompany the profile page. This has been okay. We’ve been using both for different content posts, the business page more for things to do with the restaurant and the profile page for posts that are outside articles, photos and videos that have to do with other facets of our main target group’s lifestyle.

Now for the problem; as I was searching Facebook for fun, new ideas, I stumbled upon what is now the bane of my existence: a Facebook-created profile of our business and a user created Place. Both have acquired a small following but still a following that is most likely not following the company monitored Facebook pages. I have been directing those that post on the Facebook-created page to our actual page, but am having difficulty moving the ‘likes’ over to our page.

Has anyone run into this problem or have any suggestions as to how I can begin to resolve this?

  • We have seen this issue too.  Not sure what to do about it.  Our FB created Place is where people are able to check in to our office.  But, it doesn’t post to our FB Page that we strategically manage so we get no value from the check-ins showing up on it.  Have you found a solution to merge them or have the check-in show on the Page you want it to show on?

  • Have you tried going to the Place page and claiming it? That could solve the issue. I would suggest shutting down the profile page. You can alert people it will be shutting down on a certain date and to like the new page. Technically Facebook can shut down a profile used as a business. Not sure how often they enforce it.

  • Thanks Kathy.  We have tried that.  It doesn’t seem to work.  We’ll keep at it and figure something out.

  • Facebook has been a little unreliable. I’ve tried to claim the Place several times and they have failed to call us. But shutting down the page may be beneficial. Thanks for the tip!
