Facebook: Personal vs Business! (18 posts)

  • Because sharing all of my family business with my customers is not an appealing idea, I’m still searching for a solution to this problem of linking all of my social media…is it possible to separate the two? Or, if not, to close out a personal Facebook page completely, and start over as a business page, and if so, will the past personal information be accessible to anyone? Thanks for any responses!

  • We are currently developing an ALL in one software/tool. Take a look and see if it fits into what you have in mind.  http://on.fb.me/LuiMGa and even it is not I would love to hear feedback on how we can improve it. Best of all it will be free.

  • this is one of the reasons not to  do  business on   your  personal page…..   so   why not just   start over  on a real  business page….and  try hard  to  get  your  customers  to   follow  you over to   your new page…

  • @mssilvr

The best solution is to have a personal profile and a business page.

On your personal profile you can share as much or as little business as you like. I tend to blur the lines, but my dad, who is a psychologist, only uses his FB profile for family and very close friends.

Then have your business PAGE as a separate entity. No one needs to see the connection between the two if you don’t want them to.

That being said, I’m going to move this thread over to the Facebook group because it’s so FB specific.

  • Hello @mssilvr

@rich-brooks explained it best. It is an excellent idea to create a business page to promote your business, products, promotions, and services.

It is also good to have a personal page that can be linked to your business page. This will allow you to share a mixture of personal and business information.

Some of your prospects will be interested in knowing you as a person. This is a way to connect with them to build a new level of trust.

  • Thank you very much, @rich-brooks @staciewalker @annfurnivall  @mikedigaetano, I have enough personal information through Twitter, G+, Pinterest, etc., that I would prefer a business only page…It is hard to keep up with all of the interactions when it is combined with family privacy issues. NO ONE needs to know when my relatives were born, etc. So, if this is an option, Rich, where do I get info on building a business only page? I will check the link also, Mike,…Thanks again to all!

  • @mssilvr To create a page first login to your personal profile then go to bottom and find a link that says create a page or click this link(after you’re logged into your profile) https://www.facebook.com/pages/create.php

Here first select your business category (eg. local business or hospital or restaurant or anything else from the blocks of options, then choose concerned sub category, fill up business name and contact details etc. click on agree to terms box and hit the Get Started button! This way your page is created, then just like you did fill up your profile, fill up your page (add about, mission, products details, upload logo and cover photo etc)While you upload cover photo make sure you follow fb rules like: cover should not contain any business contact details like phone, email, web etc.; don’t include Call to Action statement like LIKE US, CONTACT US, BUY NOW, GET DISCOUNT etc., Never include any price of service/product on cover photo, etc. Find more about it here : http://www.facebook.com/help/?faq=276329115767498

IMPORTANT : Cover photo dimensions : 851x315px.Choose your vanity url/username for page to make your facebook page url more reader friendly. http://www.facebook.com/help/?faq=200864223290666&ref_query=page+username

Once all this done, start building your community, promoting your business! All the best!

  • I have built a Facebook business page. What I wanted to have happen is to choose what posts I put on the business page go to my personal page. As it is now, any post I place on my business page also goes on to my personal page. When I go to the home button on either page, it says I’m using as the business both places. I’ve tried finding a way to fix this with not luck. Can anyone point me in the right direction? Much appreciated.

You should be able to change which ‘user’ you’re logged in as on Facebook, the ‘page’ (this would be your business page) and yourself.

You can do this by clicking your name at the upper right corner of Facebook.

As far as I know those posts should not be linked in any way. However, if you ‘liked’ your own page, posts that show up on your page will probably also show on your personal news feed. I have a feeling that this is what’s actually happening? If so, from what I can tell you’ll have to delete them from your news feed manually.

  • Thanks for the response. I use HootSuite for sending. I believe I may have been sending to personal by mistake. Arghh! I’m new to this and not a techie. It’s a steep learning curve. Thanks again for the help.

  • @staciewalker

What would you suggest for professionals like attorneys, bail bondsmen, psychiatrists, etc. who risk exposing their families to harm if the two pages cross over in any way?

This is a real problem for these professions, but they all want to have BOTH a personal and business page, but do NOT want the two to ever mix.

Never. Did I say NEVER, lol? The two pages should never mix or cross over.

  • Teachers also have this problem. I know several teachers whose FB got them fired. It’s a matter of keeping their education/teaching business completely separate from their personal pages… or else they can lose their jobs…

  • @atlantarobin Even if your Page is tied to your profile they will never ever mix.  No one will ever be able to see who the owner of that Page is.  Never.  So it’s completely safe to link your personal profile to your Page and just always make sure you are logging in as your Page when you are doing your business activity.

People definitely have to watch what the post on their Facebook personal profile and who can see it!

  • All this information is very helpful. I am in the process of creating my Facebook page. Currently I mix business posts with personal. Since a number of my friends are interested in my business posts is there a way to post to both my Facebook personal profile and my Facebook page at the same time when warranted?

  • Thanks, Andrea. As you can tell, I’ve avoided FB so far like the plague, mostly because most of the people/clients I know are so afraid of using it. They know they don’t understand it, so they don’t trust themselves NOT to screw up and accidentally put someone in danger.

But… you said something hopeful to me… but not sure how to implement that. You said “always make sure you are logging in as your Page when… doing your business activity.”

OK… does that mean I can create a completely different password to set up that Business Page? When I tried this before, they were linked, pretty much auto-filled with my personal stuff, and used my personal page’s login for everything. And couldn’t figure out how to make it do otherwise.

This is the kind of thing I wouldn’t think twice about outsourcing in the past, but now, I’m the one who must learn and do this.

How do I set up a Business Page completely separate, with separate login info, from my personal page? I must be starting at the wrong spot. Can you point me to write “start” page, lol?

    Thanks bunches. :)

    Robin

  • Ironically, I just started a whole series of blogs on my website related to the difference between a business page and a personal page, and there is quite a difference.  You can have both by creating a personal page and then from there click on “create a page” and create a business page.  While they are both on the same account and you can easily pop from one to the other without actually logging out every time, absolutely noone needs to know the connection between the two, and they really aren’t connected in any way.  If the blogs that I have been posting will help any of you, please feel free to check them out…

  • I’m relatively new to the Facebook Business Page (the old Fan Page) and finding it quite interesting.  I learn something new every time I pop in!

There is a relatively new feature called ‘Promote’ which you pay for, but works great for sending out notices for events, promotions, etc.  Yesterday I discovered that you do not have the option to Promote a post if you have less than 400 Likes.

  • @atlantarobin No you don’t create a separate password, so the Page is linked to your personal profile, but they are completely separate.  You are acting either as your Page or as your profile and no one has any visibility into one from the other.  For example, if you go to my personal profile, you have no idea what pages I manage.  Or if you go to any of my Pages, you can’t see any information about my personal profile.  Just like if you go to Starbucks Page, you can’t see any information about the people who manage it.  Hope that helps!
