Facebook page usernames (8 posts)

  • Hi All,

I have received an email regarding a companies page wanting to create it’s username, however finding that the name is taken by a user.

e.g. if the companies official name was company123, it would want the FB URL facebook.com/company123.

However this name is taken by a user named Joe Smith as a vanity URL.

Is there any way to claim this name for a company page?

    Many thanks

  • @samscholfield As far as I know there is no way to “swipe” the username set by another user. If their URL is facebook.com/company123 that means that company123 is the username they selected for themselves. I would recommend still having the company username include the business name but perhaps add on something distinguishing the business i.e. the tagline

  • @alexandrabriggs Thanks for confirming that Alexandra. I was just checking that I wasn’t missing some ‘magical’ way of getting a username back from user profile.

  • @samscholfield  If your client’s company is an established business and has the legal rigths of the company’s name, then you can ask facebook for a change of name. Then the user that has the name taken will have to prove that he/she has the legal rigths for using it, if they dont, they will have to take it down and give it to your client. You can send your request at  username intellectual property infringement form.
Or learn more about it at https://www.facebook.com/help/pages/usernames
    Hope it helps

  • @samscholfield  I would suggest company123 apply for an international trademark for the name.  Once granted, they will have more leverage to secure that username across all platforms.

  • Thank you Sam for opening a discussion on this topic.

It is great to see everyone’s replies on this issue. I completed a username infringement form via Facebook (on behalf of a company) for a name which was in use by a personal timeline account. I provided the company details, company name, email address, contact information.etc and Facebook responded to say that they had removed the username and that it would be available for selection.

However when I went to setup a new business page and then add the name – it wasn’t actually available. I re-submitted the form twice and got the same automated reply! – but still no action. Where do I go from here? I have a makeshift name but it doesn’t even appear in Facebook search – so it’s a double edge situation and Facebook need to think about ‘real’ support if they want small businesses to spend cash on Ads.

Just wait a few days. It may take the system a while to catch up.

  • Interesting question and I’d like to know the company name. If you had a name like Verizon or Microsoft that was taken, it easy to get that name back to the company.

I wonder about a name like Papa John (without the S) if the name was taken by someone named John who was a father. or me, I have my full name, but what if I had just taken McLaughlin and the McLaughlin Group TV show wanted my name. Who would have more of a right to the name?

When FB opened the vanity names I had mine in the first 2 or 3 minutes. What if the same was true for Company123, that it was taken by someone who had an equal right?
