Facebook Like Button No Longer Works On External Pages (12 posts)

Topic tags: likes
  • Has anyone else noticed a change in the way the Facebook Like button now works when placed on an external site?

In the past how it worked was this way:

Someone clicked “like” on the Facebook like button on an external site, and then a link to that site would automatically be posted on their Facebook wall.

Now what happens is… nothing. If you click the Facebook like button on a website, absolutely nothing happens.

This change seems to have happened in the last week or so.  Anyone else noticing this?  And if this is here to stay… then what’s the point of having a Facebook Like button on your external page at all?  It no longer drives any traffic.

  • @joshtyler

I agree, it’s not working the same. I have both the older “share” button and the newer “like” button on my posts. The share works the same as always, but not the like. I thought maybe it was just me, but clicking the “like” doesn’t post the content to my timeline like it did in the past.

    Anyone else notice this?

  • @joshtyler @juleswebb yes it is working same for me too!

  • My question is… is this intentional from Facebook and is it permanent?
The Share button is technically deprecated and Facebook says we should no longer be using it since they won’t support it.
So we can’t use the Share button and the Like button no longer does the “share” function.  That means Facebook doesn’t have a button which shares external stories/links anymore.  Is there any way that’s on purpose? What’s going on?
If this is permanent… then what is the point of the Like button anymore since it just records likes which don’t actually show up anywhere?

Perhaps more importantly… how do we replace it?  It’s going to result in a pretty large loss of traffic.

  • Is this problem only valid for the liking of links (like articles etc)? I’m asking because we have installed a Like button for a FB page on the website. If people click on it, they become fans of the page. I hope this still works. Would anyone mind testing this for me? The webaddress would be http://www.poeckl.com - you can unlike the FB page after the test again, if you wish ;-)

  • Claudia, that’s correct.  I’m talking about the LIKE button for sharing links. The one to like your FB page is a different thing and works as normal still.

  • Facebook will be removed from our site if they have done this on purpose

  • @pacey Facebook are always doing things like that on purpose. : )

  • @casmccullough such as?

  • @joshtyler are these from Blogger sites? I just came across this article on Mashable and wondered if it may shed some light: http://mashable.com/2012/03/12/facebook-blogger-captcha/

    Hope it helps

  • @Alexandra No this isn’t from Blogger sites.  Actually it’s from just about any site.

Go click the like button on any website and then look at your Facebook profile.  You will notice that no record of your like appears anywhere on your profile. Wheras it used to post a link to the page you liked.

  • For example, try clicking the “Like” button in the bar at the bottom of this Social Media Examiner page.

It will record your like in the bar, but if you go to your Facebook profile you’ll see that it doesn’t show up there.  No evidence that you “liked” this Social Media Examiner page on your actual Facebook wall, so your like has not been shared with your friends.
