Facebook killed my website… (19 posts)

  • Basically, the only way I make money is through advertising…at least that is all I can figure out.  I have a large following on facebook & no one wants to go to the website where I have advertising opportunities.  I do make some money, just not enough. I just don’t know that facebook is dependable. Yesterday, there were so many problems.  What if facebook crashes or just removes my page one day? I will be in a mess.   I need advice.

  • SEO is the best solution. If the content is appealing and it has got all the necessary words to be found at google search, any product can sell.

Mske sure the content is update, engaging, easy to follow, and the web site can reach people in serach, I am sure your website will do better than your sales on FB. Good Luck!

  • HI @kim-olive

As @ilknur says SEO for your website is you best bet.  I advise all clients to start with their own website first . Then have and update a blog often. THEN go for social media – not just Facebook!  Twitter and G+ need to be just as important to you as Facebook has become. I’d add Pinterest and LinkedIn when you are comfortable with the big three.  Use Buffer or Hoot Suite to help you manage your social media.
BUT back up to your flagship website and be certain you have the right keywords and SEO in place FIRST.

  • Thanks ya’ll.  I am definitely having to rethink things.  Never did I expect the facebook page to grow like it has.  I need my fans to communicate on the website.  I found a website I like, that seems similar to facebook, but I have been told it was a custom website so I am guessing it would be very expensive.

I, also, wonder how easy it would be to get my fans to go to the website to communicate.

  • Hi Kim Olive.
Facebook and other networks are social advertising systems.  You are on them to collect their emails and add them into your informational sales cycle.  If you don’t collect the emails and information from the possible customers, you’ll be out of luck because you are right, What will happen if Facebook crashes?  We have to depend on ourselves by knowing our clients so well we can call them or email them.  Collect those emails!

Websites that collect emails:  Mailchimp.com is free, aweber.com  has very good customer support and is pretty inexpensive (SME uses them), constant contact has been around a long time and recently I’ve heard has become more socially integrative.  Some love it.
    All the best.

  • This is a website that would work for me, http://www.experienceproject.com/stories.php.  I believe this is a custom website.
Can anyone tell me if buddypress works similar to this?  I don’t know anything about wordpress or buddypress.

I just started a newsletter last month, but I certainly don’t have 12,000+ email addresses.

  • @kim-olive Apart from other people told, I strongly recommend to start promoting your website on Facebook. I see that you post a lot on your page, are that some questions from your fans? If you keep doing it this way, people will stay on Facebook, because it’s more comfortable for them. Facebook pages aren’t designed to host a communication between people, but between the brand and its fans.

What I’d do is, that I would create a page for the questions on your website (if there isn’t one already) and link to the questions from time to time. And then, I’ll also post more links to other parts of your website, uploaded som photos etc.

  • Yes, my fans post questions on my page & my admins & I repost so they can get answers from the other fans. I have the largest community (the only one) support page in my area. Various media outlets have contacted me to post questions for them at times.  I spend up to 18 hrs a day doing this. I have to have the conversation somewhere for this to be effective. It’s sort of like Angie’s List for the military.

My current website does not offer a forum like this.  I did have a vbulletin forum. It was working for a while, but there was so much spam to deal with.

I do direct people to the website, but probably not enough.  I will have to work harder on this part. I know other people that use this template makes money on it so I can as well.

I real like this website (the forum part) and then, build a community guide around it.  http://www.experienceproject.com/stories.php, but I guess I need to go to take some classes on building a website. Can someone tell me if buddypress can do what this website does?

  • @kim-olive You work really hard. I haven’t heard about buddypress, but I had a look and it seems to me that it will fit your needs. You will just need some sexy design, but the themes look fine.

I’d try to set up a prototype of buddypress (for example on prototype.ortbenningareaguide.com) to try out what it does and not go public. I’d play with the settings, try the options and different themes. If you like it, turn it public. I can set the prototype up for you if you don’t know how to do it, let me know.

And my advice, don’t even think of learning to build websites if you really don’t like it. Focus on what you are good at and find someone else to do it for you. Especially if it’s not a lot of programming. I believe, that you will create more value during the time you would use to build the new website than the money which you would pay to someone for doing it :)

  • @milan-steskal
I really don’t know how to do it.
I love what I do…helping MY (yes, I take them personally) families and they love having the resource.  It would be nice to know that I don’t have to rely on facebook.  I feel it would free up my time if it is on a website.

  • @kim-olive if You email me your hosting details, i can set the buddypress prototype for you there. You’ve got my email address :)

  • As other have said above start working on SEO, mainly on site adding fresh relevant unique content, ideally daily. This will bring in traffic from Google, Bing, Yahoo. Just remember to include those keywords in posts. Don’t get carried away and start spamming links everywhere you can, Google is really clamping down on this so stick to onsite and social sharing for now. I would recommend adding share buttons to you site, these will in turn create nice natural organic links.
Another thing you may want to consider is the ad networks you are using, I’m seeing some pretty strange ads that would genuinely make me leave the site as a user. Maybe stick to adsense, they pay better than most anyway. I would also look into the ad placement, they just seem pretty much dumped in right now. Make them fit in with the content.
As for facebook start linking to your website content, if you are posting the questions maybe also add these to you site and link to that. Add an image section with places to visit, simple stuff like that which can then be posted with links.
    Good luck!

  • @kim-olive  We have this forum set up on Buddypress too.  So it’s a great system.  But you may also want to consider different revenue models that you can use on Facebook – a daily deal type of thing or advertising your members through your Facebook posts.

  • Since you have a login section, I am assuming you can also generate an email list. I have a firm belief in promoting through email, especially if you have a user-base which has felt the need to sign up for your content. I wouldn’t go to crazy with it – a bombardment of emails can cause people to ignore them, or mark them as spam. But once our twice a month, listing the latest developments and listings of your site.

I also believe an edge would be the personal touch – you are already doing a good job of putting your face on the page – a nice face people can seemly trust. I would make sure your signature was on the emails too.

  • kim, how about this?    more  big   pictures on  your  first page  with   linking  to some  good  resources  you   have….like  dining..recreation, tourist info,  family  of  army guys..calendar…..pictures  that show what your page is about and where to go on  your page…….and how to  get to the info  that   would make your page popular.

..less wordy and more visual….that  was my  first impression…..  i think  your basic  idea is so  good…

    @kim-olive

  • Last year JC Penny and Overstock.com got whacked by google as well as lots of other sites because of Panda and Penguin so I wouldn’t stress about Facebook disappearing. The web is very fluid in its important to look at your Google analytics daily to find out where your traffic is coming from
Getting people to your website from Facebook is like herding cats. That said
You have a very nice Facebook page with lots of fans engaged BUT there’s no links to your website and I would start there. You have the links to real estate and address in Alabama with no explanation, I would put your website there (About Us window) and an explanation of what it is that you offer.
We put the link to our website for one reason or another in about 90% of the posts the other 10% are links to artists we are introducing or causes we are changing Facebook Post links with
We are seeing visitor flow from Facebook to our website and conversions but many of them are assisted conversions.
You have a nice website and I really don’t see why you would want to move it. Moving sites can be brutal for SEO. (I speak from experience having moved ours four times in 10 years) You may want to consider looking at your “Join Now” box. I would check your Google analytics bounce rate.
You ask the visitor to join your website so they can use it but you don’t tell them why? are they going to get a gift? What benefits are they going to receive if the join?. I would move the join now somewhere deeper in the website. I would replace the box with the e-mail collection Form you have lower on the page. For every hundred e-mails we collect our website we get 2 from Facebook.
I would also add call to actions within your images instead of “click photo to read” above the banner – the call to action should be within the banner. You also have too many fonts. Pick a font- using changing fonts and colors is not helpful the reader
would also move the rotating sales banner a little lower because people don’t like to be sold as soon as they get to your website. They need time to understand your value proposition. you also have three rotating banners on the homepage. In general according to Tim Ash at http://www.sitetuners.com/. Rotating banners can be conversion killers
Lastly, you talk about Facebook on your site but you have no Facebook buttons. Installing a Like box or button may help you tie your website to your Facebook page better
    hope I didn’t over step:-)

  • First of all SEO can’t help people build FB. But SEO is for the site. my site also sell stuffs like sexy nightwear this is how we called in Thai (ชุดนอนน่ารัก) but first my products were sold via FB but I think it can’t drive enough customers for me so I started doing website, it quite works.

  • SEO is not the solution either.  I relied on being number in the first spot of Google for 5 years.  I followed all the so called “rules”.  Only to have Google change their algorithms and my site dropped to the 2nd and 3rd pages for my main keywords.  I quickly realized I can not rely on SEO, FB or any other type of so called “free” advertising.  I now utilize old fashion advertising to generate new leads.  My business has grown faster in the past year compared to the last 3 combined.  Social Media and SEO still bring in some business.  It’s just not my main focus anymore.  Search engines and social media companies have one goal (just like any business) – to make money.  They can change their algorithm at any time and thereby affect your business.

Here is a recent example with FB;  I did a post promotion last week and reached 9,000+ people for $8.  This week, another promoted post reached 800 people for $3!!!   Not sure what FB has done with their algorithm.  But it’s costing me a lot more to reach the same amount of people.
