Facebook Is Charging Fees For Users (15 posts)

Topic tags: App, engagement, highlight
  • Facebook has rolled out a new product, named “Highlight,” that allows users to pay a $2 cash fee if they want their status updates to be more prominent in their friends’ news feeds. Here’s what the new app looks like:
Want to amplify your status update? That’ll be $1.80! ;)

Yep, Facebook is testing a new product called “Highlighted Posts” that essentially creates a small classified ad (similar to Craigslist).

The fee for using Highlighted Posts apparently runs from $0-$2 and users can pay by PayPal or credit card.

The new feature appears to be in limited beta test in New Zealand; and, it’s one of many products Facebook is testing right now!

What do you think? Will you shell out a couple of bucks to amplify certain posts?

(Remember, on average only 16% of your fans see your posts in their news feed… that percent is likely higher for how many friends see posts from your personal profile. For premium business clients, Facebook is launching “Reach Generator” which guarantees your fan page posts reach the majority of your fans: 75% reach vs. the average of 16%).

  • Ooh, that’s going to irritate a lot of people because I imagine FB will put them in boldface or something else to make them stand out. If I see those in MY news feed, I’d likely hide that person’s updates or “dislike” or “unfriend” them.

I’m sure lots of businesses will use it, but I’d rather have organic growth to my page, even if that means that not everybody sees my updates.

It’s sad that only 16% of your fans see your posts — it should be 100%. Obviously, it’s another one of Facebook’s ploys to do what they do best: MAKE MONEY.

  • @laurachristianson Hi Laura.. Yes Yes Yes.. I would do the same, I believe its going to flood my news feeds with someone peddling something the wish to sell…
On the other hand I believe that it may be OK for pages, I suppose it’s entirely up to the individual  to like a page and except any status reports that are posted from that page.. where it would totally annoy me would be where we were to receive highlighted posts from friends and  friends of friends .. now that would be annoying..

  • Thanks for sharing the news, I hadn’t head about it.

As a user I can’t say I’m too thrilled about the idea.

As a business I can understand FB looking for new ways to bring in revenue, and I can see fb pages utilizing this new feature to attract more attention. I suppose in the virtual world it’s like business paying for one of those huge billboard advertisements that use to be so common along the highways. Ole Route 66 comes to mind:) Nowadays seems like most city zoning laws limit the size and number of those roadside ads.

  • this  should  be interesting…..it  sounds   against the main  facebook idea…

i  dont think the  16%  is a  strict  rule…. some pages  probably   get  way  more ….  im  pretty sure my page  gets  way more than  that….

    @donalfdellifiori

  • @annfurnivall Yes it will be interesting.. keeping in mind FB have been testing highlight post for some time without charging you for it.. now it seems the want to cash in on the classified posts, I see there are literary thousands local classified pages on Facebook,

  • Eh, useful for selling a car or something like that I guess. Remember, if you do have a truly interesting post it will get a lot of likes, comments, etc so Facebooks algo will notice and push to make it more visible (for free.)

I can’t see any of my friends using this.

  • @donalfdellifiori  Even more reason for me to shut down my Facebook page. Now I have to pay to be seen! Facebook is such a horrible ROI in terms of my time spent on it. – ARGH!!!!

  • @annfurnivall I know from watching my insights that I get much more than 16%. It’s easy to do the math to calculate it if you dive into the full blown insights page.

  • From what I can see this service is for personal profiles only.  The Pages have Sponsored Posts.  I don’t know if I would use this from my personal profile.

  • @charlene-kingston GOOD to hear….i see the super low,16%  number a lot…and hoped i wasnt the only outlier…

i will never understand  this…month after month  i  get   the  daily lunch menu  from  a resturant…and i have never done anything on their page…. i just liked it  about a yr ago….its on my page and  i see it….same  with some other pages i have liked…and  some  disappear….  i dont like  very many pages….but i  like to see them…thats why i liked them….

  • I will not use the fee-based highlight service.

  • @andrea-vahl @mgoes … I try to keep it real .. there are a number of personal pages used as business pages, so for them it could be something they they may use especially to highlight a new eBook, webinars, or even an information workshop, on the other hand I did some research on Facebook pages that offer classified for the personal user and they seen to have a great following with some towns in the local area having 3000 users, to some extent I can see that been a good tool for them.

  • I have used the Sponsored Posts for the page – part of Facebook’s beta test.  I think the proper way to use it is not for selling something but to engage – my engagement went way up when I figured out how to use it. …..sponsoring a funny post for instance – which gets them to the page and then they can see what you’re all about…..and it ran $5 – $10 for 3 days – could only be used on a recent post – meaning  no more than 3 days old.

  • I think, if (once) this tool is available for pages it could be useful to reactivate your fans. It’s integrated in the newsfeed and doesn’t disrup so much since your fans liked the page already.

What is totally annoying of course: all the commercials within the newsfeed from people you don’t know/you didn’t friend and about topics you’re not interested in. I get these since a few days now. :-(

I will wait and see how this develops, what the possibilities are to switch these messages off, how many I’ll get during the day etc. I’ll not be one of the early adopters in this case.
