Facebook introduced a new tool today called Interest Lists (18 posts)

Topic tags: Add List, Interest Lists, new
  • Facebook’s new feature “Interest lists” organizes a newsfeed into a personalized newspaper, letting users create and subscribe to topical feeds like “social media” or some niche blogging topics

Although the Add List link can’t currently be seen on your facebook profile you can use this direct url to start experimenting with this new feature now. https://www.facebook.com/addlist

Here is an excerpt from the announcement:

Lists on Facebook are a great way to organize your friends and focus on the people who matter most. Starting today, you also have interest lists—a whole new way to keep up with stuff you care about and tidy up your experience on Facebook.

Interest lists can help you turn Facebook into your own personalized newspaper, with special sections—or feeds—for topics that matter to you. You can find traditional news sections like Business, Sports and Style or get much more personalized—like Tech News, NBA Players, and Art Critics.

  • @juleswebb

very cool, thanks for the update – i just created a list and can see how handy this can be for the user. even more incentive for us to create and sustain Pages that make lots of people’s “lists.” : )

  • I just made one, too. You’re right, this can be really helpful!

    Thanks, @juleswebb!

  • @juleswebb @pegsousa @daveholmes good one! This will be beneficial for both users/fans and owners/admin: Fans will have faster and more relevant way to keep in touch with updates on topics they love, and for admin: it will be a Facebook based SEO (if they use relevant keywords in topics)

Also, this will create a whole new genuine fan base!

  • Very interesting development!  From what I’ve seen, you can’t view the lists if you are logged in as a Page, it’s only visible for personal profiles.  You don’t get a notification that your Page has been put on a list which is unfortunate.  But I think it could be a very cool feature to become more visible as your Page!

  • @andrea-vahl

One thing I noticed is that there is a “List Suggestions” in the right sidebar. These suggestions vary when the browser is refreshed/reloaded and the pages suggested are not limited to pages you’ve already liked.

I added a few pages that I have NOT “liked” and checked to see if I had automatically become a fan or not.  I did NOT become a fan of those pages, but basically am subscribed to their content.

Thought this was very interesting. Another reason the number of likes one gets is NOT the golden cup it once was.

  • This looks great @juleswebb. Thanks for letting us know about this.

  • This popped up in my news feed on fb yesterday, but I haven’t had time to investigate it. thanks for the reminder!

  • I am loving interest lists. I’ve created a few for my business so I can easily keep track of advertisers and members. Makes it a lot easier and also means that other fans who want to keep track of sponsor offers can do so. I’m thinking about creating lists according to our daily  themes too to make it easier for fans to find relevant businesses. In theory it could almost work like a social directory. Loving, loving, loving!

  • @casmccullough

You did this for your “page”

After creating a couple of lists for my page I wasn’t able to see the “Interests” links in the left sidebar like I do for my personal profile. Can you confirm that you were able to do this for a page? And if so where you saw your list links show up after creating them.

    Thanks!
    Jules

  • Hi @juleswebb. No, not created as my page. You have to do it from your profile but the lists can be subscribed to by anyone who shares your interests so you could promote them on your page. The links sit at the bottom of my “home” page.

  • @casmccullough

    Thanks for the clarification!

    Jules

Amy Porterfield posted a great how to video on interest list and how you can use them for your pages:

How to Create Facebook Interest Lists

    http://www.amyporterfield.com/2012/03/how-to-create-facebook-interest-lists/

  • Can’t wait to see the video. Thanks,  @juleswebb and Amy!

  • I’m not entirely clear how these are different from friend lists which allow people and pages and work like a filter for your newsfeed. Can anyone explain how they are different?

  • @michellefontaine

Since I’ve never used the friends list before I can’t say I know what the differences are. From what you said it sounds like you can include a “page” in these friend list, can you confirm that? And can this “Friend List” be shared on a “page”?

If yes, then I would say that the only advantage of creating a “Interest List” as opposed to “Friend’s List” would be the marketing of that list. Sharing your “Interest List” on your page would come across more professional on your page than a “Friends List”

I’d be interested in hearing what others think, any ideas or pertinent info?

  • I’ve been wanting to learn more about interest lists from the standpoint of a fan page creating the list, but it seems that’s not possible yet. Thanks for the mention of the Amy P video, I will give that a look through. I watched one from Fan Page Engine today, but I felt it was a little misleading in that it wasn’t specifically shown that the lists needed to be created as your personal profile and NOT as a page admin.

  • dear all, thanks for this update.

unfortunately I cannot subscribe our page http://www.facebook.com/AsianaPearlVision to the interests lists.our does it work for business pages to subscribe to an interest list?cheersGuy
