Facebook Experiment of the Week (9/4/12): Scheduling vs. Live posting (20 posts)

  • Hi all -I’d love to get some participating in this week’s experiment.  There have been some questions around Scheduled posts vs. Live posts and if they get less visibility.  I think we have had people say in general that they don’t see a drop.  But I’d love to get some measurements.

Let’s pick 3 posts to schedule this week, and 3 posts to do live.  Try and make them very similar if possible.  Do one post that includes a picture in the scheduled and one post with a picture live.  Then choose the other two in each category based on the type of content you usually post.  Let us know the interaction – Reach, shares, likes comments for each set.  I will be doing this too!

  • Just to be clear, you are talking about using FB scheduler and not 3rd party correct?

  • I’m in……….. have seen mixed reviews about this as well. Will let you know my results. Will do on a fairly new page and an older one with a lot more fans.

  • @andrea-vahl I had the same question as  @lorithueme as I am 90% FB scheduler posts. I do not use a 3rd app at this point.

Also, did anyone else notice that you can post as an admin through your Android smartphone now? Mine just changed last week. Doesn’t work on my Droid tablet however.

  • @lorithueme @kc_kreative  Yes I am talking about using the Facebook Scheduler.  But if you are currently using another tool, that may be some interesting data too!

  • I did notice that I can switch on my Android phone whether to post as myself or my page. I haven’t tried yet on my tablet, I will have to check on that. I just got a bluetooth mouse and I am looking for a bluetooth keyboard that I like then I will be using my tablet more often for posting.

  • @andrea-vahl I can’t believe that FB scheduler or live makes much of a difference. I haven’t really seen one. My scheduled Labor Day posts had better views than some of my weekly posts :) Still I’m interested to see what the results might show…

  • SOOOO glad for FB scheduler. No more 3rd party hassles and dealing with the fact that scheduled posts advertised for the 3rd party. I see more/better engagement with FB scheduler.

  • @andrea-vahl just a thought but wont the results be a bit biased, if you don’t post your updates on optimum days and at the optimum time, you may not get any responses. But I am willing to give it a shot. :)

  • @geoffrey-gordon Yes, they will be a bit biased.  It would be better to have a larger pool with a longer testing period but I figured we’d get less participation :)  So this is just a snapshot

  • @andrea-vahl Have used both and noticed more engagement with the FB scheduler.  Was very glad when I found about it for my FB group.

  • @andrea-vahl   I have been doing this now since the FB Scheduled Posts came out.  It has made a huge difference for me.  Now I can schedule posts at all times of the day, which allows me to reach out across the timezones.

I think the secret to success with the FB Scheduled posts is making sure that we keep up with them and respond to those who take the time to comment on them.  People do notice if we respond to what others are saying on our posts.

By adding the FB Scheduled posts I have more time in the day to focus on other projects.  I have also noticed that by adding more posts through the day that I am getting more people interacting!

  • I will test during the course of the week.
    Looking forward to the results.

  • I have to agree with @randithompson … the FB scheduler is a huge timesaver. In fact if I could schedule posts through the iPad version of Facebook an iPad would be my next investment.

In regards to reduce engagement, I haven’t seen that. What I have seen is an uptick in gaining fans as we post content on a more consistent basis for our clients. Plus it allows for some content to be translated as needed later on.

Any results people would like to share from their past week of using FB scheduler?

  • I use the FB scheduler and I don’t notice much of a difference. I think there are still some “peak times” that our FB community members go on and see our post. I have used a 3rd party app to schedule as well, but I do like the fact that FB has their own scheduler now!

  • What were the results of the experiment?

  • So sorry I didn’t post about the results, @kathyweir!  It’s been a little crazy for me lately.

SO my results were basically that there wasn’t any difference between a scheduled post and a non-scheduled post.  I did this on a page where my reach usually averages around 200-250 people.

    Scheduled              Reach
    Picture post             196
    Video post               237
    Status update           201

    Posted Live             Reach
    Picture Post              204
    Video post                 224
    Status update            181

So there is really nothing I could see that changed.  Anyone else have any data to share?

  • Thanks Andrea, this is good to know. I have been using the schedule post quite a bit lately. I would never use a third party app before. Appreciate your follow up!
    @andrea-vahl

  • One other interesting thing that I saw, @kathyweir
I did a post with Social RSS and NetworkedBlogs on my Grandma Mary page,  which are the third party apps obviously and I normally get between 700-900 in reach and with the Social RSS I had 951 and with NetworkedBlogs I had 929.  So that didn’t show any diminished reach.

  • It sounds like all the rumors are true, no more punishment for third party apps
@andrea-vahl. Have a good trip. Thanks for the update.
