Facebook Completion Meter (6 posts)

  • I just read this article on Mashable about the new profile completion meter that should motivate users to provide more information in their profiles.

I understand the idea behind this, since advertisers will be able to target a wider audience.

But will users, who kept their details limited so far, actually fill in more information just because of a meter? What do you think? Would you?

  • @claudiapoeckl  Claudia, I think those people that have not completed their profile because they may have forgotten, or meant to but haven’t gotten around to it yet, will be prompted by the meter to do so.  However, those that have kept their profiles intentionally limited will probably continue.  IMHO

  • It’s psychology, people see it and just want it completed…over a billion people it will work very very well.

  • Agreed Scott. Look at LinkedIn.  They have been very successful “helping” people fill out their profiles to be found.  Its that dang meter hanging at 65% completed that drives people crazy and makes them want to get it to 100% already that gets them to enter in the information LinkedIn needs them to so the site can be successful.

    Psychology is a power thing.

  • @claudiapoeckl It will definitely work. LinkedIn does it very well and it’s one of the core gamification concepts.

  • @claudiapoeckl I think for quite a few people they just can’t be bothered to fill out their profile completely. It takes too much time and they don’t want to deal with it. Me, on the other hand, I’m an obsessive form filler outer so my profiles are always at 100%. Lol
