Facebook Business Page linked to Personal Profile? (8 posts)

    • Can a business page be started without a personal profile? The rules of Facebook seem to say “no”.

I created a business page in the category of Community/Government for the local city that I am employed with from my personal profile. I added 2 additional officials to help administer the page.

Now, someone in the city recently attended a facebook seminar and was told that you should not start a facebook business page from your personal profile and that it is the number one mistake business are doing.

Is there something I am unaware of? Can a business page be started without a personal profile? The rules of Facebook seem to say “no”.

  • You probably misunderstood what the person was saying. The only way you can create a Fan Page is if you have a profile.
What you cannot do is use a profile in the way you would use a fan page.

  • @marya  You’ve created your Page correctly, with multiple administrators from their Profiles. What is a violation of FB’s rules is to have a Profile instead of a Page for a business, and that might be what the speaker actually said. Profiles are supposed to be reserved for individual persons, not organizations.

  • I think that person was confused and talking about creating a business name as a profile, @marya – which is typically the number one mistake businesses are doing.  Because I think it’s a mistake to create a business profile without a personal profile attached (and you can tell him a Facebook author told you that).  So you did it correctly.

You CAN create a business page without a profile attached but you are limited with that business page then.  You can’t Like other Pages as your Page or comment on other Pages or even search for other pages when you are logged into your “business-only” page.

  • @andrea-vahl what happens if you are no longer associated with the page can someone else take it over without a loss of the information tied to the personal prifile

  • Absolutely, @alicia-huete  I do this for my clients sometimes – I create the page, then make other people Admins of the Page and then delete myself.  So it’s basically transferring it over to them.  No one knows that I’m the admin of the page (the profile and the Page are totally separate) and then the new admins have ownership of the page afterwards.  No one can see who the admin is on any page unless they choose to make it public in the Featured area.

  • Thank you !!

  • Hi,

I have a created a page attached to my profile.  When I use Facebook as my PAGE, can anyone; friends or general public, see that it is attached to my personal profile?

I am quite a private person, and have very little personal info on FB or any other SM.  My family is also private, and of course, they are my friends.

I have recently had an incident where someone was ‘spying’ on me. Sounds absurd!  But true.  I have not associated with this person for 10 years and was quite shocked that they were able to find out my daughters name, partners name etc, they randomly friended a friend on my list.

I’d rather my PAGE no be visibly linked to my personal profile.

If the business is going to work, it will work – I dont think my personal profile will have that much input.  I have no desire to be ‘famous’ or even well known, just want an online business that has its own identity.

    Regards

    Chrissy
