Facebook Apps/Mobile/Competition (6 posts)

  • Quick question: Just had this competition app developed for a client, but it’s not being picked up on the Facebook iPhone app, do you know if third party competitions (or even just apps) can be viewed via mobile?
    This is the page: https://www.facebook.com/redseaholidays
And this is the app: https://www.facebook.com/redseaholidays/app_241750382542996

  • Hey there, third party apps don’t work on Facebook’s mobile app I’m sorry to say :(

  • It’s a huge problem and one i have no idea if facebook intend to address or just leave. There own mobile app doesn’t show apps made specifically for their platform. It sucks but I’d love to hear people’s thought’s on this?

Anyone think facebook will fix this? Can they fix it?

You could develop an app that is mobile friendly but you’d need to give out a different URL to the facebook one above.

That makes it tough and a bit of a half fix at best.

    Hi Scott,

I personally believe (and hope) that Facebook will launch mobile version of tabs soon. The mobile app is almost ready for it. The Timeline for Pages in mobile app was launched just a few weeks ago. In last few months they were focusing on rewriting the mobile app from HTML5 to native iOS code to make it faster and now they are working on native app for Android to make it faster too.

Then more new features should appear in mobile app :)

But in the meanwhile you can use some kind of “smart URL” which will direct desktop users to the normal tab and the mobile users to the mobile version of the promotion – the ordinary mobile web. Then you simply share this url instead of the Tab url.

I think that GroSocial and NorthSocial have this smart URL feature for their promotions. You can also develop it on your own, it’s not so hard. Let me know if you need to know more.

    Best,Lada

  • Hi @ladik_ thanks for that info. Yes I’m aware of the “smart URL” idea. I just always saw it as a half fix and thought it was a big thing to do but after hearing you say it isn’t that hard to develop on your own, could you please provide some more information or ideas on how one would go about doing so?

I’d be very interested to learn more about that as i have a lot of users who are unable to participate in apps we use.

Blows me away how many people not only use mobile primarily, it’s their only way of accessing the internet!

    Times are a changing

    Cheers

    Scott

  • You may want to ask our Guest Expert this week, @bpicks about this issue, @dennis-taylor  He may have some insight into contest apps on mobile because some are advertising that they are mobile-ready.  Go to the thread here:  http://www.socialmediaexaminer.com/clubs/facebook/forum/topic/facebook-guest-expert-ben-pickering-discussing-facebook-contests/
