An app on Facebook is something that someone makes that you can choose to interact with (and allow access to your information) on Facebook. Apps on your Facebook Page are a little different (they are also referred to as “tabs”). These can be added by an admin of the page to enhance the Facebook Page experience. The “Photos” and “Events” link are actually apps that are made by Facebook and automatically added to your Facebook Page for you. Most Facebook Pages have incorporated a “Welcome” app. This shows up when a new user firsts visits your page and should help convert them to actually “Like”ing your Page.  There are many other apps that you can add. Some of them are ready-made, and some you can customize to fit your own needs.

I’ve included a screenshot of a page I recently coded some applications for. The links on the side outlined in red are the links to the applications that I added to the Facebook page. I’ve also included the link in case you want to click around and check out the funtionality of the apps.

Also, some apps won’t be available on a cell phone, because they won’t have a mobile version. Most apps are only accessible through a browser on a computer.
As far as pinterest is concerned, I can’t really help there. I haven’t delved into that, yet. But, I bet that there’s an app out there that will let you integrate that into your Facebook Page and Facebook Profile somehow.

  • thanks  cassie  ,  so negatives or  warnings? i thought id  read  about some   clogging  up   the page….

we  do use  several tabs,  i didnt know  they were apps…im  the admin,  with  my  other one  doing the  tekk work….  …heres our page    http://www.facebook.com/greenoakantiques    i hope  we  get  the timeline  soon  so i can turn  some of the tabs into  something  bigger and  neater…

i did just  sign up  for   facebook instant….but  if i want to use it how do i get to it?

I haven’t heard of any clogging up the page, but I suppose they could if they did auto-posting or some such. This is probably going to be dependent on the individual apps. I would research reviews of apps before installing just to make sure there’s no major bugs.

I’m not sure about facebook instant. I’ve never used it….so I can’t help there. Maybe someone else knows the answer?

  • thanks  cassie….ill  have my co- admin    take a look…its probably   right there on our page ….somewhere…i do  the marketing  but not the  tekk side of it…ha ha… @cassiewitt shes  really  smart  but  rolls her eyes atr me sometimes…its my di law…

You’re welcome! Good luck with the tech side. Even those of us who are more familiar with it can get stumped by Facebook sometimes.

  • If you are talking about an app, that runs inside a facebook fan page… then the answer is no, they cant mess up your fan page.  This is because they run inside an iframe.

If you mean, can they “mess up” your profile page, well, some apps can post to your profile page… and may make it look messy (but not likely). However, thats one of the reasons facebook now organizes apps into sections on your timeline.

An example of an app on a fan page is http://www.iwipa.com my company owns this one.  It allows you to create mini web sites within your fan page.

It doesnt harm your page, the purpose of this app is to enable you to enhance your page.

  • @vincentedwards  thanks.guessill quit  worrying  about   it…..

..i would like to add something  bigger than a note or a tab  to our  page…featuring our   counters…i will have my web person  look at  your  link   tomorrow….

our  facebook is so  good  for  us…im  kind of  amazed…

  • Im always up for creating something cool that many people want :)

  • So does anyone know how mashable is doing their page in Facebook? What’s the app?

  • @christopherholt  Which tab were you talking about on Mashable’s Facebook Page? They have several.

  • @christopherholt ~ One of their tabs is a Wildfire tab (the Mashable Promotions Tab) . . . I would imagine that most of them are since wildfire seems to offer a lot.  It’s too expensive for me though.  I use the shortstack creator for my 3 pages.  I pay $30/month, but I do it so that I can use their databases and have my pages ‘white labeled.’

OOPS ~ one is an Involver tab (The Twitter Tab) . . . looks like they have a conglomeration of app creating plans on their tabs . . .

  • @dedimason I use Shortstack, too. You can’t beat the price or the feature set. It’s pretty amazing.

  • OK cool…I will look shortstack up
