Facebook App Developer question for custom tabs (16 posts)

  • Does anyone here develop custom tabs and install them?  I’m actually rewriting the chapter on developing your own custom tab for the Dummies book and I’m having trouble actually installing it on the page.  Do you need to fill out all the App Details to do this?
The steps have changed since I last wrote the book and I don’t usually do tabs this way.  Thanks for your help!

  • @andrea-vahl I have done a couple of custom tabs. I used My Tab and had to install the tab on my personal page then follow the questions to use it on a fan page. Does that help?

  • Yes,  @tracy-peterson-champagne but I can’t get to the point where the custom tab has it’s own App page to use that to install it on my Page.  I’m missing something.

  • @andrea-vahl I usually go to my personal page and the left side bar is the listing of all my apps. Then I click on that app after it is installed and it will show a listing on my pages. Once I click a page I can edit the content. Then on the fan page under  update info your app should show up. Then you can also edit your settings there also. or are you still missing something…….or am I not following you??

  • @andrea-vahl Hi Andrea,App pages as such are gone. Now, there is a normal Fan Page, which you can connect to an App.

To connect this app to a page, check out this screenshot of Static Html iframe tabs:

  • I’m still missing something from there, @tracy-peterson-champagne – my App isn’t showing up in the App section there.

@ladik_  I’m familiar with Static HTML but I’m talking about developing your own custom tab rather than just installing an app that someone else developed.  Is this how it has to happen with your own coded custom tab too?

  • @andrea-vahl I’m trying to remember…. i know it took a bit to get it on there. Try using your fanpage but being logged into your personal account and trying to find it under your app settings in your fan page. I think I remember it being tricky. I’ll keep looking to see if it jogs my memory.

  • @andrea-vahl
I think this is the way:

You have to add your App ID into this URL and then visit it:

    https://www.facebook.com/add.php?api_key=YOUR_APP_ID&pages=1

    Does it work for you?

  • @andrea-vahl Did you get it yet? This is also another way to get to it.

I just installed a my tab star on a page I don’t really use. Once it is installed, go to the page and look on your tabs, it should show up where tabs go. Then click on it and should get this page…..that says…Congratulations

You have successfully installed the application tab! Your fans won’t see this message.

Now, change this content to be your custom landing page.

  • @andrea-vahl

The other way is to create a new fan page only for the app and then follow the screenshot I’ve attached above. But I think it isn’t right to create new fan page only to connect the App to another page :(

To create a fan page for your App, go to Developers Dasboard, “Edit Application”. Then on the left is a section “App Details”Then navigate to “Contact Info”, where is the button “Create Facebook Page”

And to the previous post: I’ve also seen a 3rd party tool which created the connect link automatically after filling the App ID in. I’ll try to look for it.

EDIT: I’ve found the tool, but it doesn’t work anymore.

  • Ahhh that’s the step I’m missing, @ladik_ – I saw that URL and didn’t add my own APP ID in there – doing it too quickly and didn’t read it so it didn’t go anywhere. Thanks!
And thank you @tracy-peterson-champagne for your help too!

  • @andrea-vahl

Great, I’m glad it helped! :)

Andrea, I know it is a bit stupid, but may I ask you for your help? Could you please contact me on lada@tabfoundry.com? Just a few lines, I promise.

    Thanks a lot!

  • your welcome.. @andrea-vahl. Glad you were able to get what you needed :)

  • @andrea-vahl

I want this book you are writing, where can I buy it?

  • My book is Facebook Marketing All-in-One for Dummies, @carlosdixon and it’s available on Amazon.  But if you are looking for a better book on Facebook App development (mine just has one section on developing your own Application) I would recommend Jesse Stay’s book Facebook Application Development for Dummies also available at Amazon.  Thanks for asking!

  • Thanks for the heads up on Jesse, I will be on the look out for both.

    Cheers
