Facebook and Secure Browsing (6 posts)

  • I wanted to make sure everyone was aware of the change that Facebook made on October 1st.

If you have any custom tabs on your Facebook page, the images on those tabs must be hosted on a secure SSL site.

If your images are not hosted on a secure site, anyone who is browsing Facebook with a secure connection sees a plain white page when they look at your custom pages (i.e. Welcome page, etc)

Please be sure you check your page.  To do so, when you are on your custom page, change the url from http:// to https://.  If you can still see your images, you are all set.  If not, you need to have this fixed.  I visit so many pages where you cannot see the welcome page due to this change and the page owners are losing out on the impact of their custom pages.

    Hope this helps!

  • Great way to check that @lisaschulteis!  There is a lot of confusion around this issue.

  • Hi @lisaschulteis

I partner with a booking engine for Hotels on Facebook. And at the moment this booking engine is not hosted on a secure SSL site.

You still can go to Account Setting/ Security and turn off Secure Browsing.

Though I have requested the developer to start host the booking engine at a secure SSL site. It will effect cost & price, but not to much.

So I will see what they choose to do next year. Might have to look into the option of develop a booking engine myself. You never know.

    Cheers…

  • @aremorch – yes you can turn off the secure browsing option, but I turned it on purposely.  It helps to keep your information safe when browsing.

Companies have the option to host their images on either a secure or unsecure site.  They just need to be aware that anyone browsing securely will not be able to see their custom tabs that they spent so much time and money on.

I just wanted to make sure everyone was aware of it as many of the small business owners I have spoken with are not.

    Thanks for your comments!

  • I agree @lisaschulteis like @andrea-vahl indicates there is a lot of confusion around this.
At the moment I have not got a lot of feedback about this from my Hotel Family. But no doubt it is something I will push hard on towards the developers next year. Because just like you most users on Facebook will turn secure browsing on by default.

And today I actually has to tell users to turn of their secure browsing of to view my booking engine. No doubt this has the potential to create frustrations for clients.

So I most definitive support your awareness initiative.

    Cheers…

  • Thank you for that information Lisa. I admit I was unaware of this change in with all the activity I’m involved in but since I am just moving towards getting custom tabs it wasn’t the unpleasant surprise it would be to visit my FB page and find nothing there.
