Facebook ad – click fraud? (9 posts)

  • Would like to hear your experiences…

I have a sneaky suspicion that Facebook is using Fake accounts to increase their ad revenue.

This is what happened yesterday:- my Facebook Fan page got to 1000 fans (YAY!) so I wanted to send a little gift to fan nr. 1000- I clicked on said ‘fan’ and found the account to be extremely empty. One name, one photo and a location map in north Africa (?). It also said in the timeline 2012, 2011, born- I clicked on ‘fan’ 999 and found the exact same thing: One name, one photo and a location map in North Africa- Fan 998 – the EXACT same thing..

That’s when I paused my Facebook advertising until I do further investigation.

Every post I have on my fanpage is seen by approx 200 people… would this be the true amount of real fans? Is only 1 in 5 a real person? Or am I getting paranoid?

A quick Google search on “Facebook ad Fraud” confirms my suspicion, ( http://www.businessinsider.com/facebook-accused-of-click-fraud-by-advertiser-2012-7 ) but I really would like your feedback and experiences.

    Kind Regards,

  • I’m very suss to this facebook ad fraud after seeing a page get a huge amount of likes from ads and produce virtually zero engagement.

It just made no sense that these people would be clicking the ads, liking the page and then not engaging coz the ads were not misleading and many had no offers at all, where just about the subject matter.

Something dodgy is going on that’s for sure!

    Good post @ivankamenken

Facebook must be sweating they will get forced to refund a big chunk of ad revenue. I know if i could prove it to be just half of what i think they’d be looking at thousands from me alone! OUCH!!!!!! #FBstockslidesagain ;)

  • My Facebook ads were for likes and were supposed to be only open to the following target audience:
This sponsored story targets 255,460 users:

    • who live in Australia
    • who live within 50 miles of Brisbane, QLD
    • who are not already connected to Horses-store
    • whose friends are already connected to Horses-store

So why on earth do people from other countries like the page via this ad? And when I follow the actual person’s information it looks extremely empty and screams FAKE account to me!!!
The actual number of people talking about the page content is 183.

  • I haven’t noticed any fraud so far. Maybe it’s because my ad budget is so low and I’m not interesting for FB ;-)

I made it a habit to check out all new fans – not because I wanted to see if they are real, but I wanted to know who they are, what they do for a living etc. Of course this is only possible if your fan base is not growing like mad within a short period of time…

If someone can proof that FB ad clicks/likes were faked, this could create a big uproar. But not only for FB – this would be a difficult time for all pages selling online advertising. Because who can guarantee that clicks on an ad banner were all real or that the number of visitors to a paid listing were correct…

  • I can’t imagine FB doing fakes about adverttising – but geeze it would be an exciting story if it was true.

  • Surely if they were to make fake accounts for clicks they would at least set them to private so people can’t see?Another option would be another company trying to destroy facebooks revenue stream by making people think these sort of things?
Let the conspiracy theorys come haha

  • Facebook aren’t doing Fakes, they are bots that are doing the fake clicks (not sent by facebook at all) but the issue is what percentage of clicks are bots and how much do facebook know???

I’m starting to think its much higher than we think and even higher again on the sub continent and other areas!

  • To be fair even if the fake accounts are not from facebook, they could very easily combat this issue by not counting clicks from profiles that are not a certain age/ have little activity.

  • There have been several posts about this, @ivankamenken but the allegations were for click bots as  @scottlinklater said.

I have heard of others having weird Likes with advertising too – very untargeted which seems strange.  I don’t have any idea how that might happen.
