Facebook Accessing All My Profile Info—OK???? (8 posts)

  • I was just on FB and went to a fanpage with a contest, to enter the contest FB wanted access to my profile info.  That makes me weary, it was the only way to enter the contest, so I moved on.

    Can anyone tell me:

    1. What do they get when asking to access my profile

    2. Can you get around that step and stil engage on the fan page

    Thanks

  • @chrissamichelle They want your Friends and email list. FB probably has your email list already. I never willingly gave mine up but they obviously have it. No sooner have I added a new person to Outlook than FB magically starts recommending them as a a friend.

You said you were on a page, trying to enter a contest. Although FB itself has your data, that page does not. But they are trying to get it, and tempting you to give it up to enter the contest. You can engage on the page without giving up information, but you probably cannot enter the contest unless you do. Sigh!

  • THanks Abigail, that is what I thought.  Urghh.  Even though I know they seem to have access it just seems wrong to give it away.  My contacts are mine!

  • @abigailgorton ~ Rafflecopter had this option when I tried it out for my contests (ended up going with shortstack).  All they accessed was the name and email of people entering . . . WHY?

You have to notify winners through email, not through Facebook ~ according to Facebook’s own rules concerning contests.  In shortstack, I have a form that asks for name and email.  I get the same info, customers have to work a little more . . . but they’re NOT scared because my page is suddenly asking them for access to their profile.

  • @dedimason Good to know. I love these clubs – little bits of information like that can be so helpful. Thanks!!

  • I agree with @abigailgorton. There is always such good information to be had here. Thanks @dedimason for your input. It helps me too!

  • @dedi makes sense, thanks for the insight!
