Explanation of ”Total Reach” (13 posts)

Topic tags: #FacebookInsights
  • I have a question about the “Total Reach” insight. I understand that Facebook’s definition is the number of unique users who have seen a post.

Here’s what I did-I shared an image from someone else’s page on my page. The reach of my post is now over 3,200. The average reach per post is only @ 200. The page that it originated from has over 3,000 fans. My page has @ 400.

Here’s my question - Are the 3,200 people that were “reached” a combination of the people reached by my page and the original page OR were they reached by my page alone. In other words, did these 3,200 people see my post with MY pages profile image?

Sorry if this sounds a bit confusing. Thanks for any insight!!!

  • @lydiamediavilla

It’s everyone that has seen the post, all pages combined.  For example:

If you post an update on your page (let’s say 301 people saw the post) and someone else shares that post and 300 of their friends see that post, it will show up in your insights as 601 people seeing that post.

  • @iamconsulting

Thanks for your quick reply Nichole.

So here’s another question. The insights say 112 are talking about this post (112 comments are on our wall). Are these comments appearing on other pages as well?

I wanted to test this so I went to the page that the post originated from and commented on their post. That comment did not appear on my page. So that leads me to believe the comments on my page are from seeing people see my post not a shared version. What do you think?

  • @lydiamediavilla

Comments are only shown on the post made on that specific page.  So if you make a post on your page and 112 people comment on the post and someone shares your post on their page, only the comments that are made on the post on their page will be shown, not yours. Make sense?

  • @iamconsulting

Yes, that makes total sense. That’s what I thought. So the 112 comments is really good since we normally see about only 20 comments.

Thanks again Nichole! You’re the best!

  • @iamconsulting Thanks for the insight. Now I will be able to better explain to my board any Facebook post results.  @lydiamediavilla Great questions!

Our site gets limited traffic (except maybe around conference time!) so 600+ views is good for us. Definitely the more visual posts get seen more often. Case in point: I tried a fill in the blank (no response) and under a 100 views. This type of post just doesn’t turn up in people’s news feeds.

  • @kc_kreative

You’re welcome!  If you have more questions about insights, I’d be happy to help!

  • remember that not everyone has your post presented to them. There is a big difference between potential reach and real reach.

  • @richardmclaughlin Hi Mac, can you explain the difference. Thanks!

  • @lydiamediavilla the timelines are set in a way that they don’t show every single post by every site you have ever liked. Also, there are sites that you like, but select to not see in your timeline. I like Coke, I opted out of seeing their stuff.

I like what George Takei posts, so I have listed him as an interest. Since he is an interest, every post makes my timeline.

FB used to allow fans to elect to see ALL posts by selecting “All Updates” from the right hand corner of a post. For community pages such as this, though, FB recently decided that only certain fans will see certain posts, and it plans to ask me to pay for more fan views.

To add an interest, click MORE on the bottom left menu on your home screen… In the INTERESTS section, click ‘Add Interests’ …Click “Create List” …Click on the image of your interest.

Encourage people who have like your page to do the same with your FB page.

  • Facebook Pages Only Reach 17% Of Fans http://allfacebook.com/facebook-page-17_b73948

  • dont  forget this is  the average…. many   do  much  better and many   are probably  dormant or  are in  industries  with few  facebook prospects………  @richardmclaughlin i see this number all over the place….but  know mine  and  some others  arent even  close to this….. my  worst posts  get   around  30….

if  marketers  have clients with stores or  resturants   hopefully  they  will be able to  get them a lot higher than  17%%…especially if  they  dont rely on   too many   contests  and   prizes  and   other stuff that   doesnt attract  actually interested people……..

  • @annfurnivall  George Takei posted that FB people told him his choice was to pay to remain visible. I think the dominant pages (George has 2.3 million Likes) will be the most impacted by a pay-to-be-seen process.
