Elusive Timeline Features (13 posts)

  • If this is a duplicate, I apologize. I’ve searched high & low… please lead me to the thread where the answers hide!

Looking at a business Facebook page, there are 2 things I’m trying to figure out:

    1. “Recommendations” section:  Some people have a place in the right column of their timeline where customers can write in a recommendation for your business. “Thanks for the haircut! It’s perfect! I’ll be back!”  How do you get this to show up on a timeline?

    2. URL in the “About” section:  Some business pages have the business’s URL with a little globe icon next to it. This format for what is displayed here is tied to what business type you choose – but when I try various types, I can’t find one that has this in the format. Of course, you can just include your URL in the details that this section does choose to show for whatever business type you’ve selected… but does anyone know how to set it up so that the URL space with the little globe comes up?

Thank you in advance for any help with these!

  • Yes these features can be confusing, @mycommcoach!

    1.  The Recommendations are available only for Local Businesses and show up automatically.  When someone Likes a local page it will immediately ask you if you want to Recommend that page (that recommendation then shows up on the person’s Timeline and goes out to all their friends, and it shows up on the Page’s Timeline in that box)  If you are a local business with checkins then I would suggest making sure you are categorized that way so you can get the benefits of checkins and recommendations.

    2.  Can you show me an example of a Page that has the URL with the globe next to it?  I’m not familiar with that.

  • Hi @mycommcoach :)

    1. The reason these pages show the ‘Recommendations’ section, is because they are set up a ‘Place’. For one of the pages that I know however, we had the business set up as a ‘Place’ to be able to get ‘Recommendations’, but recently changed back to ‘website’. The ‘Recommendations’ feature however, wasn’t removed from the page, which makes me think that maybe it happened bc the page already had hundreds of reviews.
You can change the business type in Admin Panel -> Manage -> Edit Page -> Basic Information

    2. Do you have a screenshot of an example? I personally don’t think I understand the question.

  • @alexandrapotora Very cool that we posted at exactly the same time with the same answers!  :)

  • Love the duplicity! Thank you @andrea-vahl & @alexandrapotora!

Here are some examples of the “about” section including the URL w/the globe icon:

  • @andrea-vahl Literally :D that’s great!!

@mycommcoach I gave it a try and it showed for me too when I selected:
Local Business & Places -> Professional Services.

2 of the first links you mentioned, showed ‘Professional Services’ in their About section, you could always guide yourself that way too :)
    Hope this helps…

  • This is great guys, thanks!

Trying to wring the most out of Timeline has been a chore for some following the removal of the landing page format for businesses. The recommendation system is a great way of putting out positive feedback about your business in a discrete way – thanks for all the tips.

  • Yes, as @alexandrapotora said, those pages appear to be listed as services, which would trigger their website to display there, but there are ways around it…just include a link to your website in the description of your business. I have it on my page and it automatically links it with a live link: https://www.facebook.com/ekcetera

  • @andrea-vahl & @alexandrapotora  Thank you for your responses. I do actually have my facebook page set up as Local Businesses & Places > Professional Services — but the URL still doesn’t show up, which is why I’m confused.

You can see it here: http://www.facebook.com/MyCommCoach

I’ve changed it to other settings and, although it will switch to other formats, when I bring it back again that doesn’t seem to fix it. I realize this probably just means I’m stuck with this one & just need to select a category where I can put my URL in the description that shows… but I manage a number of different pages & so I’ve been trying to get a sense of control over this section. :-/

    Thanks for your help!!!

  • @mycommcoach probably a new glitch. Have you tried the web address without the http://?

  • @Alexandrapotora Interesting idea! But unfortunately no, it didn’t work. :-(

I’m wondering if it isn’t different between pages, depending on when they were created.

  • @mycommcoach This is such a trip!! Wow, I’m sorry I couldn’t help- this is really puzzling!

Good luck with it, keep us in the loop :)

  • This is great! My first thought was to approach restaurants owners with the recommendations feature.  Seems like a perfect fit.
