  • Any loss in EdgeRank using auto posts with 3rd party suppliers (hootsuite)?  How about with Facebook’s auto scheduler?

    Thanks in advance,Chris

  • @chrisparker,

Facebook’s auto scheduler: I am intuitively inclined to say “no”, but I haven’t seen any research either way.

3rd party apps (e.g. HootSuite): a while back, there was a confirmed loss in EdgeRank. Facebook apparently fixed the problem, but then in April 2012 HubSpot conducted its own internal study and found that posts published via the API have statistically fewer “likes” and a lower CTR (click-through rate).

In short, I’d stick to manual posts as much as possible, followed by scheduled posts from within Facebook, followed by scheduled posts from 3rd party apps.

  • Yes, Facebook’s autoscheduler is too new to say, @chrisparker as  @lukaspleva mentioned.  But Hootsuite doesn’t get seen as much in the News Feed.  I say it’s ok to do from time to time if it’s convenient but now with the Facebook scheduler it’s better to stick with that for scheduling until we know more about how it performs.

  • I love Facebook post scheduler!! Since it’s within Facebook I don’ think that you would lose edge-rank. I did notice that when you schedule on Monday for Friday when it posts on Friday it says 22 minutes ago but click on the picture and it says Monday.. I assume its just still buggy and that Facebook is ‘working to correct this problem’..

  • The data from a large enough sample size seems to indicate the penalty we discovered was both real and reportedly fixed for 3rd Party APIs. But it appears the 3rd party tool penalty is back in play with Facebook’s news feed updates over the past few months.

Penalty or not, I maintain it still makes more sense to post organically. Especially your ‘call to action’ posts because you want those to be authentic, engaging, or relating to what’s currently going on.

  • @rooseveltjonesvery well said.

@chrisparker I noticed a significant 6 point drop in our EdgeRank, and it came immediately after using Hootsuite. Mind you too, I used it only twice out of 20 posts during the past 2 weeks. Quite the drop. Very excited to use Facebook scheduling instead!
