Does sharing a photo on a brand page impact negatively audience reach? (10 posts)

  • Allow me to clarify the question in the title. I have a client who manages a page with over 11,000 fans, quite a dynamic Facebook page with comments, contests and the like.

    Her FB page is for a Hotel Association that represents some 30 hotel members. So two days ago, she shared a post from a member (originally posted on the hotel’s FB page), which was about a contest. A nice photo was in the post, explaining the contest. So far so good, right?

    Usually, any post done on my client’s FB page reaches between 1,000 to 3,000 fans, sometimes a bit higher during contests (we tried promoted posts during the Holidays, worked very well). But get this: the post done yesterday, sharing a member’s original post, reached an audience of… 28 fans! After 48 hours… Houston, we have a problem?

    Has anybody encountered this situation recently? Is it another one of Facebook bugs (’cause I’ve experienced a few with other clients over past few days…)?

    I believe Facebook has lowered the impact of Photo posts and increased the impact of text-based posts, but these numbers seem too severe to be a result of that.

    I would say the reporting is wrong. Maybe wait 24-48 hours and have another look.

    Long time no speak, hope you had a great 2012? Wish you all the best in 2013, that’s for sure ;-)

    Yeah, I’ve heard of the downgrade in photo posts, but this is beyond. I also hope it’s a reporting problem. I thought it may be because it was a shared post, not an original one, but still: 28 views after more than 24 hours, it’s ridiculous. It’s an outlier, if anything.

    As for business, 2012 was a launch year for me and it looks like 2013 is off to a phenomenal start. Really can’t complain, all is good ;-)

  • I’d go with the bug theory – sharing should do nothing but push reach – I couldn’t post an image for the life of me last night – nothing would upload to our fan page – children running companies. 

  • we kind of had a similar  post  yesterday….  our low  end for a picture post is usually  4  or 500, that  would  be  real low,    and  this one  got about  50….no  clue… @fredericgonzalo

  • I am seeing similar results.  Text based posts are reaching between 16k to 21k for me depending on engagement while photo reached 1,800, even with the same engagemet. Who knows if this is a bug or a tactic Facebook is using to get us to now pay for media based posts.  Only time will tell.

    I would post another picture and see if you get similar results.

  • @moinshaikh Hey, thanks for the link to SME’s Facebook page and conversation. I missed that one and it’s spot on. Still, I believe there is some kind of bug because we’ve posted yesterday and today, some posts including a photo, and we’re getting our usual 3,000-ish reach.
    The post made 3 days ago is now at… 41 views! Highly abnormal.
    Anyway, I am getting better insights, thanks to y’all.
