Does Google crawl public profiles? (22 posts)

  • I think they do, but I’d like someone to confirm what I’m thinking.

  • @amyhallbiz Hi Amy

The easy answer is yes they can, but only what is made public. Especially if someone is searching for you specifically and your profile is searchable.

Facebook Pages are public by default.

It is interesting to note however, that people’s comments when using the Facebook comments app on blogs are searchable as well.

    Hope that helps.

  • @russellallert  That’s what I thought. Searching on my name LinkedIn, G+ and Twitter show up before Facebook. I’m considering combining my Facebook profile and page. I’m not really sure if the investment in my page is worth my time. It occurs that many people are befriending me rather than liking my page.

  • @amyhallbiz If you do that, Amy, be careful how you use your profile as Facebook can get weird on using personal profiles for business use.

A lot of people will tell you to keep the page and try harder but I am not going to do that. Have you thought about using Facebook Groups instead? It’s more of a forum experience and can build a great community around a single idea or subject.

I have written an article about Facebook Groups on my blog.

Let me know what you decide as I would love to know. :)

    Cheers!

  • @amyhallbiz Google also spiders your Facebook info page, which gives you the opportunity to use keywords to raise your page ranking in search results and that might result in more likes.

@russellallert I’m interested in Google Groups, but wouldn’t want to replace my page or profile with that. I’ll check out your article.

  • @krmcgee Thanks! But I think you meant to say Facebook Groups. :)

  • @russellallert You’re welcome. Lol! Yep, meant to say Facebook Groups. Thanks for catching that, otherwise people would be scratching their heads. Next thing you know, I’ll be calling Google Facebook.

  • @krmcgee GooBook? Facegle? :)

  • @russellallert Goobook and Facegle. Classic. If I end up accidentally saying either of those on down the line, I’m blaming it on you. : )

I read your article and found it very helpful. I also bookmarked your blog for future reference.

  • @krmcgee Awesome! Thanks for the kind words.

I liked Goobook myself. Although I am not sure you would want to Google that. :)

  • @russellallert I liked Goobook, too. But yeah, probably not a good idea to Google it.

The one aspect of Facebook Groups that your article overlooks is the benefit of joining them. Back in 2008, when I was still using my old profile, I joined groups that interested me and interacted with other members. I think doing so helped grow my friends list as well as likes, comments, etc. So, from a business standpoint, joining groups that are in some way related to your business could be useful in gaining more exposure. I plan on trying this myself. The only catch is you can’t join groups using a fanpage. You have use your profile to join.

Also, in an earlier comment you mentioned that Facebook can be fussy about using a profile for business purposes. Do know any specifics? How are they fussy about it?

  • @krmcgee That is true, KR, it’s a great way to network.

Regarding the Facebook profiles issue. I know that in the past Facebook has deleted profiles that were setup as business pages. If you are using your real name and are merely networking, it should be fine, but don’t try and use a profile with your business name.

  • @russellallert Oh, ok. I think. I use my profile with my real name as a more personal approach, while my fanpage promotes my company. But my profile url is my company name.

    KR

  • @russellallert  Thanks for the caution, but my business name is my name. I’ve had a client that started a Facebook profile with her business name … it’s been around for over 2 years. She wanted to be anonymous and didn’t want her name on any social media. I just don’t see the return on time investment in Facebook. I’m a member of groups, don’t have my own group … don’t have the time to invest. But I’ve never gotten any leads off Facebook. I use the same strategy with LinkedIn and I get at least 2 leads a week from LinkedIn. IMO Facebook isn’t about doing business with someone … just about having fun and keeping up with old friends.

  • @amyhallbiz It all comes down to how you use it, Amy, and your target audience.  If it isn’t working for you, then don’t use it.

Just because everyone is using it, doesn’t mean you have to.

Facebook is good for some things and not so good for others. I’m starting to prefer groups to pages for the networking, but again, it all comes down to your own individual business.

    Cheers!

  • @amyhallbiz Maybe it depends on the type of business re: FB. I’ve just started investing more time in developing my presence on FB so it’s too early for me to make any judgments regarding Facebook. Someone recently suggested I join Linkedin but decided against it on the grounds that I don’t want to join every social network out there just because lots of other people are doing it. You got my attention when you said you get 2 leads a week there. I’m not sure if Linkedin would benefit my business type or not.

  • @krmcgee If you are a business to business provider it makes sense to be on LinkedIn. If you’re business to consumer … not so much, Facebook is the place to be.

  • @amyhallbiz Thanks for the info. I want to do business to business in addition to business to consumer, so I may still join Linkedin.

And your user name reminds me like a Post-it Note that I still need to set up MailChimp for my FB page.

  • @krmcgee I thought that Facebook was restricting a lot of the Google spiders from crawling on pages. i heard that from the SEO guy that’s working with us- is that true?

  • @alexandrapotora I’ve not seen or heard any news of FB restricting Google. The last I heard, FB actually has a deal with Google to crawl pages. My FB page shows in Google’s top search results, evidence that their spiders are crawling FB.

  • Thank you for that update @krmcgee not sure why we heard otherwise. Thanks a bunch

  • @alexandrapotora You’re welcome. I’m not sure why, either. A lazy SEO guy? I don’t know.
