Do you consolidate similar facebook pages or keep them seperate? (4 posts)

Topic tags: Facebook
  • Hi everyone,

I have just joined this amazing space and had a question:-
I have just joined a company that has 14 Facebook pages. They organise and run mass participation events consisting of runs, cycles etc. Because the, for example, runs are in different locations, they have gone with a different page for each area/event. My question was – would it be worthwile consolidating all the different “runs” pages into one or would you say keeping them as seperate pages/events would work better? Would it be beneficial to have one page where you mention all the different events, in-line with the strategy?
    Advantages/disadvantages.
    Any help would be great.
    ThanksEroll

  • I’m a new member not a seasoned pro so take what I say at face value.

Our town has formed a co-marketing group..so all posts by business page owners part of the group are shared on the co-marketing page…(similar to your scenario except you have the bonus of distinct geographical locations).

    I’ve gained a few fans..

I think that intrinsically, there are benefits to having your page post shared anyways? So, I think it’s a good idea :) To have a master page, sharing posts from all the others.

  • Hey Susan,

Thanks for your feedback. It seems as though the individual pages advantage is the whole individual geographical location scenario.

    CheersEroll

  • Sorry for the delay in reply @eroll-chimanga – holidays are a crazy time.  This is also a challenging question.  Here are some of the advantages and disadvantages as I see them:

    • 14 pages means a more fractional community – you don’t have a large “social proof”
    • 14 pages means you have to post content to all those pages – much more labor intensive.  If you have overlapped material, you don’t have the benefit of one post going out to all.
    • But 14 pages also means an ease of targeting.  You know those pages are geographically targeted and you can do other things like participate on other local pages if you have the bandwidth for that.
    • If the total fans adds up to over 5000 people, you can use the Targeting Feature on Facebook to geographically target your updates which would help if the events are local and don’t pertain to everyone.
    • There also may be branding considerations – if you are planning on expanding, now may be the time to consolidate rather than later.

I think those are my thoughts for now.  I am more inclined to merge them unless the focus of the events is very different just because of the labor required to keep all 14 pages going.  But if you have the bandwidth and if the audiences are very different, then it makes sense to keep them separate.  Hope that helps!
Anyone else have any thoughts on merging or not merging?
