do third party scheduling apps negatively impact your edgerank? (15 posts)

  • i know lots of folks on here like hootsuite (as do i) but now i’m hesitant to use based on the potential negatives in can have on edgerank (sample article below)http://blog.hubze.com/2011/09/does-using-hootsuite-kill-your-edgerank/

can anyone point to new studies or have additional input on this topic?

    thanks!

  • Hi Peg,

Yes, Facebook is penalizing users for using automated services such as HootSuite. From what we’ve seen and heard through research, Facebook groups all automated post at the bottom of your Fan’s NewsFeed where many will never see the post. Facebook is really trying to discourage admins from using these types of services and penalizing them in the process. Here’s an article with some more info: http://avlmarketing.com/2186/facebook-posting-manual-automated-party-apps/

    Hope this helps!
    Ashley

  • Yes, it’s been going back and forth  @pegsousa – sometimes I’ve seen the posts collapsed in the News Feed, other times not.  But most recently I’ve been seeing more and more posts collapsed from services like Hootsuite or other 3rd party apps.  It’s just better for visibility to post live to the wall.  It’s frustrating because sometimes is makes it much easier to schedule posts but it’s Facebook’s party.

  • I know that Mashable’s posts have recently completely disappeared from my News Feed.  I did eveything to try to bring them back, posted on their wall, commented on a post, and ‘Liked” a post.  Nothing worked.  Then, yesterday I went to a third party app and saw that Mashable was listed as one of their big name customers.  It actually made me scared to use the app.  My pages are having enough trouble being seen without being penalized for using an app.

Additional note, I did try the app but could never get it to post to my pages.

  • Thanks for the insights. I’ll keep advocating manual posting the majority of the time and become more aware of grouped posts on the News Feed.

@AndreaVahl … It most definitely is Facebook’s party… and we have crashed it. : )

  • Wow! This is definitely new information to me! I use Hootsuite for most of my postings to Facebook.

  • I have the same conundrum. There are people/companies I follow on Facebook who I sometimes never see in my feed, which is really annoying since they’re the ones I want. And as nice as it is to say I’ll post on Facebook and engage all day – I have a job! The worst thing about having your posts collapsed is that they get grouped with other posts by completely unrelated people if those people are using the same third party app.
Here’s the thing we have to remember: Facebook is an advertising platform. At the end of the day it’s not there to do what we want it to do or work the way we want it to work. It’s there to force as many eyes on the page as possible so they can sell and convert ads. People who post from other services and don’t go to Facebook are exactly the people they’re trying to get rid of. Maddening. Yet true.

  • The best way to solve the issue of not seeing pages you follow is to establish lists. I have list for all my business pages, social media and restaurants. I have a few restaurant social media clients and I like to see what other restaurants are doing. This also gives you a means to quickly check through pages you need to see daily.

  • I was told yesterday by a few people that FB no longer dings your ER with Hootsuite. So I think I am going to continue using it for now.

  • Hi Everyone,

Facebook is no longer penalizing third party publishing apps (see http://www.allfacebook.com/facebook-pages-publishing-2011-11). We have made several tests recently and the reach of a post published directly on the wall or throug a third party app (ours ;-) was the same.

For your understanding, there are service, such as hootsuite, which use the same publishing app for their millions of users, which is more risky for the edgrank, and others, such as Buddy Media, Vitrue or agorapulse, that use a dedicated app for each customer, so no adverse effect on the edgerank…

And yes, Facebook is a complex environment ;-)

  • Just an FYI-I did a little experiment, and using HootSuite means any shares of your posts made that way are not counted.  We posted the same post via several 3rd party apps and on Facebook pages, and only those posted directly on Facebook showed the CORRECT number of shares (or any at all).

  • @lisasingelyn – good experiment – i’ll try that too @emericernoult – thanks for additional info@kathyweir – great idea re: the lists! thanks!

  • @pegsousa@lisasingelyn, good point, third party apps will offer the possibility to commentand like, but not to share! This is a Facebook limitation. So if yu have only a few share, no worry, if you have many, this something to consider!

  • @EmericErnoult FYI, Facebook actually lets the share occur from a third party app, it just doesn’t register it as a share.

  • @lisasingelyn Sometime they use the old sharer as a trick, but this is not the genuine FB share, that is why it is not counted by FB on the post
