Do I have to? Facebook is my fun space! (14 posts)

  • Every day I read about how valuable Facebook is to business marketing, and I get that. But Facebook is where I get to joke around with friends and share personal news. I’m always wise about what I post but heck, I have my recent wedding album posted there. I am loathe to open that type of info up to business contacts. It just feels like an invasion of privacy. Maybe I am naive. I know Facebook has updated their privacy settings but I haven’t quite figured them all out yet. Is there a way to use Facebook marketing effectively while retaining some personal space or is that just not possible?

  • @cherelleleong

Hi Cherelle – I too struggled with that.  I tried a two different ways and they both worked differently.  I made myself a page that is separate from my personal and business pages and then took Facebook privacy to a whole new level! =)  That was a lot more difficult to correspond with people because you’re still posting as a page so I set up another personal Facebook account that I use specifically for business and keep my regular, fun Facebook open in Chrome and the other in Firefox. =)

  • I too have struggled with this issue, how is it possible to set up a new facebook account, essentially I am thiniking do I need to use a seperate email account just to set up the account or can I use the one I always use (for business too)do do this?

  • Just a word of warning if you create separate accounts.  It’s against Facebook rules and they can take down both your accounts if found in violation.  Good luck!

  • If you are not using Facebook and Facebook analytics for targeted marketing, you are short changing yourself.  It is pretty simple to create a separate page and mailbox for your professional persona.  Remember, though, you should change your personal one to something professional contacts will not stumble upon, if you don’t want them to see what you have there.  Facebook is not as private as people think and many businesses will look in the social space for your name befoe doing business with you to check out your reputation.

  • @cherelleleong I have also done what  @iamconsulting does but my accounts are under my two names separately. All of our business pages are set up under my professional account so, even with others being admins, I must share my login credentials with IT to have record if something would happen to me. Thus I did not want my personal facebook that I have had set up since it was “thefacebook.com” and i was in College to be accessed by anyone other than me. Thus I set up a new account using my current name.

  • @cherelleleong  @iamconsulting I used to have two separate accounts as well for personal and business, however as previously mentioned here, it is against FB rules to create two pages for the same person, and if it is detected you FB will delete both accounts without notice.
One way that works for me, is to work on your privacy settings, and create “lists”. Once you create these lists, you are able to determine the settings for the particular list. This includes status updates, photo uploads, and you can even select previous photos or photo albums and determine if the list can see them or not.
Here is a starting point for help with lists:http://www.facebook.com/help/friends/lists
This has worked great for me as I feel the same way that I do not want everyone I work with or customers to see everything about me. I also created a list titled “Mom” because she is now on Facebook and I felt she didn’t need to see all of those photos from when I was “younger” in college, haha.
    Hope this helps!

  • I don’t add business associates as friends to my facebook profile, and I removed the subscribe option from public view. My profile page is personal to me, my family and my friends. My facebook page, twitter, linkedin and google+ are where I openly communicate with other professionals and clients.

    Cheers,Jules

  • @juleswebb I am with you. Personal is private and personal. I like having my personal profile and my business page.

@iamconsulting @lacducoeur Using a personal profile (your own name or not) for business purposes is agaionst the TOS. FB just deleted the account of one of our members – see this thread. http://www.socialmediaexaminer.com/clubs/facebook/forum/topic/need-help-immediately-facebook-has-disabled-my-personal-page-and-fan-page/

  • I use Facebook lists to post certain things to just certain groups @cherelleleong.  I do keep a lot of things public though because I don’t think it’s bad to show personality.

  • @Jules Webb …completely agree, that is why I have not started a biz page on FB…only when they let me separate accounts completely will I go that way…I do not want pictures of my little grand-babies floating all over the web. It is very hard to promote a biz lately w/o opening all the doors (I kinda like some closed!)

  • I know it is difficult to seperate your personal & business lives – I actually have 3!!!!!!
I have my current business, I one I want to stop & get away from!  I have my on-line business, I one I really want to work on full-time & then there`s my personal / private life.  Even allowing for settings & lists I STILL cannot seperate these 3 parts clearly & distinctly as I would like.

I really feel that this is a major issue for a lot of people & coupled with FB pages taking Timeline  what will many FBers do?

Perhaps FB feels that it is so big & the competition so small, relatively speaking, that so what?!?!

Look forward to reading your thoughts / opinions.

  • i have this problem  too….  just naturally lots of my  friends on my personal page    are   friends  from the store…. so im  really  restricted  from  getting  too deep into politics or  the new  christians, or  making  fun of   glenn beck , or  swearing,  or   anything    funny  but off kilter…stuff i would naturally    share with  closer  friends….i hate to turn  down a friend  request   with  someone i   know…and i  have  a lot of  friends  who support  the store  so i have to watch it!!!

  • Has anyone created a “personal” fan page, eg. Mary Smith (fan page) and managed to make that “work” to solve this issue? Im interested to know.,, in theory, if people “LIKE” your page… then they are following your posts there.
