Detroit area Social Media professional needed by non-profit (11 posts)

  • Greetings all

I’ve been approached by a Detroit area not-for-profit with a view to handling their social media.  It’s not something I can take on right now, but I don’t want to leave them hanging so would like to provide them with some recommendation / options.

They have a website that has been in place for several months, but are looking to get their feet wet in social media.  Their area of focus is empowering the Detroit community, providing after schools services, rebuilding houses, providing role models, stay in school programs and job training, and a few other bits and pieces

In Social Media terms, they currently have a youtube account and that’s it.

I have pulled together an outline brief to help the key guy there (a Pastor who is not Social Media savvy by his own admission) know exactly what information he needs to provide to anyone who is interested in doing this, and also to allow him to evaluate recommendations on a like for like basis.

The initial budget is $1000 to set up the social media presence and run it during startup, but thereafter he’s looking for costed proposals for running social media on a monthly basis.  It’s likely that this will start with Facebook and possibly twitter, but they will be open to other options as well.  He has people who are in a position to generate content for the website and that can be used on SM, plus some high profile supporters whose SM presence can potentially be leveraged, so it’s really just a case of agreeing the strategy, setting up the platforms and managing it for an initial brief time period, plus of course developing the proposals for a longer term relationship.

If anybody has credentials or interest in this area, please let me know.  I’m due to get the outline SM brief to him this week and would like to send some options as well.  I’m not posting direct contact details here since the guy needs some help navigating his way through this and I don’t want him barraged with proposals, suggestions or questions that he’s not equipped to process/answer/understand.

If anyone is interested please let me know.  I’ll pass on details and, with his permission, put you in touch.

    Happy Holidays to all.

    Robin

  • @robinjohnston Did you get any private messages on this?  If you need some names I can put you in touch with some people who would be interested!

  • Thanks for sharing Robin, it sounds very intriguing.

  • Hi Robin,

I’m actually from the Detroit Metro area and would be interested. I work with wedding professionals on their marketing here in the UK but am always happy to help someone out back home. Could you let me know if you’re still looking for someone?

    Thanks,Heidi

  • @andrea-vahl Hi Andrea – I’ve had a bit of interest, but would be interested is getting a few contacts from you on this as well.  If you can put me in touch that would be great.  Thanks!

  • @h4baine Hello Heidi.  Sounds like you did exactly the opposite to me.  I was born in the UK but ended up in Motown.

When I spoke with the client, he did specifically ask whether I was from the Detroit area (it was probably the Brit accent!) but if you are originally from here and know the city well it is possible that he might be OK with that, particularly in view of the fact that others would be generating content and your role would be determining how best to shape that content and market it.

If you can send me a bio and some contact details I’ll certainly pass them on and get back with you.

  • That is a weird coincidence! My experience is in content and inbound marketing so it sounds like that would work well with what they want to do. I could even assist in tweaking content to make it more engaging.

This is my digital bio but I’m happy to send over a CV if that helps: https://www.vizify.com/heidi-thompson

In addition to my business and work experience, I’ve done Hubspot Inbound Marketing University, Jon Morrow’s Guest Blogging course and Copyblogger’s Teaching Sells. I love marketing :)

  • Where in the UK are you from by the way?

  • @h4baine  I tried your vizify link but got a 404, so perhaps you can send a CV (how delightful to hear it called a CV!).

I’m sure they could use some help with expressing the content – I know the people involved are experts in their respective fields but whether they can write compellingly is a different matter altogether.

I’m from London, and spent most of my marketing career working for agencies there (Euro RSCG, Ogilvy, Saatchi).  Also worked for Campbrll-Ewald in Detroit in the 90s, primarily on Chevy.  Moved back to Detroit in 2008.

  • @robinjohnston Hmm…maybe this link will work better: http://bit.ly/XPwFV1 Vizify is actually a pretty neat tool to create interactive bios. I’ve been suggesting it to everyone since I came across it.

The CV thing has become habit :) I prefer it because the only people I knew with CVs in America, had doctorates. If you send me your email I’d be happy to send my CV to you!

That’s interesting. I don’t know of many people moving TO Detroit around the time you did. But I do love it :)

  • I think my family were the only 4 people that moved into Michigan that year.  We probably quality for some kind of grant!

    I’ll PM you my email.
