Creating a calendar for scheduling posts on Facebook (10 posts)

  • I am tryng to create my own calendar – excel sheet? – to put together a schedule of the posts/links/questions etc for a facebook page so that when it comes to posting, I have all the information set up for a number of days/weeks in advance, this would of course be flexible.
Apart from Hootsuite etc, would anyone have an example or ideas about doing this?

  • @pollyb A while back, there was a thread on this topic in one of the 3 clubs, but I can’t seem to track it down. This place really needs a search bar… ;-)

Anyhow, here is the link to a template that was made on google docs. Hope this helps!

    Cheers,

    Great, many thanks Frederic :-)

  • Yes, @fredericgonzalo we are working on it :)  Post Planner also has an app but it is paid.

  • @pollyb I use Post Planner. It is a paid app but i think it is totally worth it as the posts are more closely native to FB than hoot suite.

  • @pollyb @andrea-vahl @abigailgorton, you may also try LaterBro, a free app!

I have tried several schedulers, but the one that works best for me is a  tableI created in Word (since I have Word open for almost everything I do during my workday, it makes sense for me to use it, instead of Excel). My table has three fields:

    • Day of the week
    • Date to schedule update
    • Facebook teaser (including hyperlink, if applicable)
I then pre-schedule my non-time dated tips into HootSuite. I use this method for my own posts, as well as for several of my clients. Works like a charm.

  • @laurachristianson, I recently read somewhere that people tend less to engage when they see automated posts like HS. consequently, I stopped using it in favor of manual.

Being new to this whole area, I am wondering what if any experience you’ve had automating some of your posts.

Susan, I’ve also heard that Facebook doesn’t give top billing to posts from outside services such as HootSuite, but I haven’t found any hard evidence to support this (if anyone has stats or studies on this, please share them).

I do both — pre-schedule some updates on HootSuite and post others live. I haven’t noticed a discernable difference in doing it one way or the other. Am interested to see whether other people have.

  • Laura, while I don’t have “hard evidence”, I have two anecdotal observations.

    1. Facbook definitely aggregates posts from outside services; I’ve seen this consistently across accounts. So if I post something from Hootsuite and a friend of mine posts something from Hootsuite, even though they are completely unrelated, they will show up grouped in the news feed with one post taking prominence and the others available only by clicking a link that says “more from Hootsuite” or something to that nature. So your post could get de-prioritized in a case where it’s grouped with other posts from the same service.
    2. I’ve also noticed that sometimes I’m missing posts entirely in my news feed. My husband and I work together and sometimes he’ll ask if I saw something he posted and I will scroll back and never see it. I don’t know if this has to do with posting from an outside service or just Facebook deciding what I should see, but I find it odd that a post from a person who I give priority to would be missing entirely.
