Clarification- No More Fan Gating? (16 posts)

  • As there are no more welcome pages with the new timeline, does that also mean no more fangating?

  • It would appear so…

  • From what I can tell Facebook is also banning asking for “Likes” on your timeline banner, so combined with the fact that you can’t have unique landing pages, it looks like Facebook is removing any rewards programs for fans. For a lot of businesses, that is going to be a bad thing. I’m not sure how that is going to affect us yet, as we do get judged by our fan count.

  • I think most like the pages they land on anyway, I know a lot of the people I talk to do. No rewards program will make it more real I think, which is nice for people visiting.

  • Over on a web page app, you can still “hide” content from people if they are not fans.  Although, this is not as powerful as before, the switching mechanism itself can still be used in this manner.

  • Although you can no longer specify a default landing page, it’s still perfectly possible and acceptable to create a custom tab and direct your visitors to it. See the link below for more information:

@jasonreilly: Where did you read that Facebook is banning brands asking for “likes”?

  • @Lukas Pleva – thanks for the article!

  • @lukaspleva, thanks for the link. May i know how can we create images for all our custom tabs? Is it possible for us to get free images for it? Since there’s a specific size required for the custom tabs images we may have to resize them ?

  • @louisteoh: I suppose any image is a go as long as it’s relevant to the tab and there are no copyright issues. You can resize it using any standard image editing software.

  • @lukaspleva Hello Lukas! It is in a video on the new timeline formats. The big image at the top can’t have anything that asks for likes, friends, etc. No calls to action. No coupon codes. You can learn more here:

  • @lukaspleva Oh! And thanks for the link! I love pagemodo!

  • @marygreencny

while the default landing pages are gone, you can still employ some fan-gated content. take a look at macy’s page – specifically their Win a Million tab page. it encourages the like BUT once you “like” you don’t see the fan-gated content until you refresh your browser page… which seems to be a pretty big glitch… not sure if that’s tab software trying to catch up…

  • @pegsousathe glitch was reported to facebook, they are apparently scheduling a fix for that.

  • Thanks for the link, @Lukaspleva.

  • Your cover photo should not be promotional  https://www.facebook.com/help/?faq=276329115767498

You can pin an important post to the top of the page for up to 7 days – leverage this wisely.

Thanks @lindsayhunt for your newsletter tip!

  • These new updates are kinda crazy.

I knew timeline was rolling out for all personal accounts. Also pages trying to make the best of it.
