check in promotion (12 posts)

  • i want to run a  check in  promotion  this weekend at my  brick and mortar  store… ….  where they use their phone  and  check in and  get something…..

have  you ever  run one?   how  did it  work?  any  details ?   thanks

  • @annfurnivall

I recently read that there is a huge percentage (80%+ if I remember correctly) of people that haven’t even heard of “check-ins” and the percentage of people that do check-in is really low (something like 2%).  I wish I could remember where I read it…I’ll try to find it again to give you some exact numbers.  My suggestion would be to give step by step instructions on how to check-in and be very clear about how it all works.

I’ve run a few check-in deals for clients, mostly restaurants, that offer a free appetizer for checking in or bogo meals.  It definitely generated buzz and got a lot of check-ins.  I think the best for a one-day event was a little over 120 check-ins for a local restaurant.

  • From what I’ve seen,  @annfurnivall people have to be told that with a sign that there is a checkin promotion.  So few people think about checking in and then don’t know to watch for checkin deals.  I had a really difficult time finding anyone running one when I was writing about Checkin deals.  But it is easy to set one up.
Here’s Facebook’s help page on them:  http://www.facebook.com/help/?page=186851114696034  Some of the tutorials I’ve found on setting them up are before the new Timeline.  But you just go into your Edit Page area and the Deals is on the left hand sidebar when you have the Place page enabled.  Hope that helps!

  • @iamconsulting  thanks  nichole…that  [resturant] situation  sounds  pretty  good…

. im thinking  most  of   my  upscale   women  customers would  know    know about  checking in…. my neat old lady  women  probably not and probably  not the  guys …but we are all about women!!!! anyway…..  they  are almost always  our  big  buyers…

  • @andrea-vahl thanks  anderea…i looked at the link….. i  wasnt   planning  one like that…i was just  having them  show us  on their phone  that they were here and  that  they shared it on their facebook page…….that  they  checked in…. we informed them   thru an email…already….

am i  outside the  facebook  rules  here?  is  an informal unapproved thing like i  planned  all wrong…..

  • @annfurnivall

You’re welcome.  If you need help nailing down the details, let me know.  I’m happy to help!

  • @iamconsulting thanks  nichole… if i  do  it in the informal way  as i described  am in in   conflict with the rules?  i just  sent out an email  describing  my check in idea…. and  didnt  do anything  thru  facebook….

      im  kind of  worried  here….

  • @annfurnivall

Well, what you described is in violation of Facebook’s TOS (terms of services). It’s kind of a grey area because doing a check-in in that way doesn’t exactly fit the “rules”. Here’s what Facebook says:

You must not condition registration or entry upon the user taking any action using any Facebook features or functionality other than liking a Page, checking in to a Place, or connecting to your app. For example, you must not condition registration or entry upon the user liking a Wall post, or commenting or uploading a photo on a Wall.iv.    You must not use Facebook features or functionality as a promotion’s registration or entry mechanism. For example, the act of liking a Page or checking in to a Place cannot automatically register or enter a promotion participant.
You could try using a promotion app from possibly woobox.com or northsocial.com.

  • @iamconsulting thnks  again….we  are  going to   look at  this in the morning….i hate  grey areas..its  pretty  complicated….

. we  would  just  be   asking them to  check into a place{our store)….. thats  all they have to do….  but in a way that shows up   on their f acebook page……

  • we  are now  doing this  thru  facebook and not on the side…. thank you…

    @iamconsulting @andrea-vahl

  • @annfurnivall

Great to hear!  Good luck Ann!
