Changing your FB ”name” (28 posts)

Topic tags: business page, name, URL
  • When I first started my FB page, I was focusing mainly on sharing tips, so used my one opportunity to change the name of the page to “DesignByKiltzTipsNTricks”

Over time, I did a Place page, hoping to be able to get back to DesignByKiltz, but it too was sucked in & combined with the TipsNTricks page.

    I don’t have a ton of likes – what’s the best solution?

Am I jumping out of the pan into the fire by deleting the page & starting clean? And, if I did delete & start clean, would I be able to use DesignByKiltz?

    Thanks for your help!

  • I didn’t find the DesignByKiltz page, @designbykiltz – is that the URL?  If you have set the custom URL and you delete the Page, they don’t release that URL for a while so it makes it difficult to start over.  Why do you need 2 pages?  I think you can market your business and still have the tips focus.

  • @andrea-vahl, currently DesignByKiltz does not exist. I would like to switch from what I do have now to it.

And, I’ve used the “use it once, think twice” change your name link.

I’m not looking for two pages, but one that is named for my business only, even if I do share tips there. And, I would like to say “find me on FB at DesignByKiltz” instead of the longer tongue twister.

  • Ohhh I get it!  Sorry I was confused.  Yes, it may be hard to get the other name if you release the one name.  I don’t have any great suggestions.  Even though you don’t have a huge fan base, it is still something and I would keep it rather than start over from scratch.

The other thing you could do is a redirect from your website where you created a page called designbykiltz.com/fan and redirected it to your page.  Just a thought.

  • I would suggest starting over, especially if you don’t have a lot of fans.  You can always let the fans of your current Facebook page that you changed pages and provide the link.  If you know of people that directly engage with your current Facebook page, you can go the extra mile and invite them personally.

  • @iamconsulting I agree.  We had to do the same thing because of an account our with our Fire Clothing site.  While the original page is still there, we kept the name and just put (official) after the name and asked everyone to come over.  With a little promoting, we blew our old fan count out of the water, almost growing 40x in fan base since we first began.  Do it now before you grow any bigger and the loss could be much greater!

  • @Andrea-Vahl Can you still merge pages?

  • @jonathanlass

That’s great!  It really does make sense if you don’t have too many fans and you’re not happy with your vanity url.  It’s much more difficult when you get bigger because of the amount of work it would take to drive people to the new page.  I say “Go, go now!”  =)

  • @bertievg

You can but you have to merge the page that has fewer likes into the page that has more.

  • @Nichole Schlecht Thanks for sharing but where or how do you do this?

  • @bertievg From what I’ve seen (but I can’t replicate it on any of my pages right now) you have to be logged in as your Personal Profile, navigate to your Page, click Edit Page and it’s under the Resources tab.  There will be a Merge Duplicate Pages link.  Can anyone confirm that this is still there?

  • @andrea-vahl, I cannot see the ‘Merge Duplicate Pages’ link – seems it’s not available anymore?

  • @andrea-vahl

I know i saw it there as well but it sure is not there now. I suppose it is not available anymore and i don’t understand why as it actually help FB cleaning up inactive pages, don’t you think?

  • @claudiapoeckl @bertievg – I think it’s not available anymore.  Frustrating, because as you said, Bertie, I think it helped clean up some old pages!

  • This brings up a question. If you change the name of your page, can you change your custom URL?

  • @iamconsulting, @jonathanlass, & @iamconsulting

Thanks for your feedback. The only thing that I’m afraid of is that when I set up the location page, I did use DesignByKiltz, then it got merged into my current page.

Does anyone know if when you delete a page the name is released so it can be reused? I would hate to delete what I have & lose it. Now, if I try to set up a new page with DesignByKiltz it’s telling me that I already have a page similar & I can’t set it up.

I have to agree with the “I don’t get it” why FB is making it so hard ~ you’d think they’d want businesses to keep things straight.

  • @kathyweir, Which, is what I really want to do – change the custom URL. I’ve got the biz name correct on the page. It’s the URL I’m fighting, wondering over.

  • I have been contemplating a page name change and have been hesitant because of the URL. Anyone have experience?

  • @kathyweir
If you change the name of your page it does not change your URL.

  • Just a quick update for everyone that gave input. I was able to switch my FB URL. Here’s what I did – in case anyone else needs to.

    1. I did change my business name on the page
    2. Removed address, phone, etc from the page
    3. Created the new “location” page using my business name, filling in all the info
    4. Worked with a network of colleagues to get the 25 likes needed for a location page
    5. Was able to secure the unique URL I wanted

    http://facebook.com/DesignByKiltz

Now I’m encouraging people to move over, as I plan to take down the old page before the end of March.

You’re welcome to stop by & join in.

  • @andrea-vahl @designbykiltz

Yes you can still merge i just merged my two pages today.

You can do this under your ‘resources’ button inside ‘edit page’.

The ‘merge’ option will only be available if you have more than one page with similar names. You should merge into the one you want to keep, or the larger one, which means navigate to the merge option form that particular (larger) page.

    Make sense?

Am not sure what everyone is talking about here but you can change the URL/username for your page one time only i.e. facebook.com/yourname also through the ‘resources’ section right?

  • @arty
Thanks Art and others who have shared. I don’t think I am going to merge any pages but it’s good to know it’s an option. Thank you so much

  • Glad you worked it out @Christy Kiltz
I think the merge pages option is there for when you create your own Fan Page, and have a Place page (say people have ‘checked-in” to your brick and mortar store)…or when FB has created an arbitrary “Community Page”, and then the “merge” option is available under “edit page”.
It’s also important to check your “employment” link in your About section of your personal FB profile – you’ll want to make sure that Fb hasn’t changed your company to a made-up “community page” link, instead of your own Fan Page (essentially creating an extra Page, with no info or updates in it)…I’ve seen this on dozens of people’s personal profiles, incl lots of social media experts.

@arty – yes, you can change your URL one time (I think FB says “due to typos” or something like that).

  • @designbykiltz @angeliqueduff Thanks to all of you for your step by steps on this. I’ve got a couple of loose end pages out there that I dared not fool with, but following what you’ve done here helped me understand exactly what i need to do now. Invaluable information for a task that I had just swept under the rug, lol. Thanks for your help.

  • If you merge two pages, do the fans combine on the two or do you lose one set?

  • @Chrislay – I believe it merges to the Page with the most fans…I’m not exactly sure, but I have a feeling you’d loose one set of fans. That’s a good question though.

@atlantarobin – have you tried to merge pages yet? Did you notice your fan count?

I have to do this for a client this week, so I’ll let you know what happens.

  • @angeliqueduff Haven’t had time to try to merge yet. Will follow up later on that, but it will probably be a month away as I’m covered over with other things right now.Robin
