changing my profile url to be my business page url (20 posts)

  • Hi Guys

I’m a fan of the social media page on FB and have been finding it so helpful.
I just have a tiny little question though about FB urls and I’m scared I’m going to get it wrong and not be able to reverse it!

my problem is I have a profile page and a business page.

    my profile page is: http://www.facebook.com/webdesignme

but I really want that url for my business page which is currently – http://www.facebook.com/pages/webdesignme/113077452054930

how do I make this happen?
I know you go to basic information / Username.
If I click on the link beside it it says – ‘
You are using Facebook as webdesignme

To access this page, you’ll need to switch from using Facebook as your page to using Facebook as yourself.’

then in the drop down it has my profile page and business page and one area where I can change the username so I’m not sure if it’s going to let me change my profile username to something else and make my business username ‘webdesignme’ or if I will lose ‘webdesignme’ all together if I change my profile one to something else.

If I change the username on my profile page will I be able to use ‘webdesignme’ on my business page?

I would be so grateful for your help anyone and would be happy to ‘like’ you and comment on your page!

    thank you! :)

    Michelle Bate

  • Hi Michelle,Since you have already established a username for your profile. You will have to chose a new name for your business page.for instance my profile page is facebook.com/localbusinesscowhile my business page is facebook.com/localbusinessco2

I know I was pretty bummed out when I discovered I could not use the same name for both. but we are stuck with FB’s rules..

If someone knows a work-around I am all ears

  • @webdesignme  hi michelle, as  @localbusinessco said, you can’t get that name for page since you’ve gotta that name for your profile. To get username for your page, go to facebook.com/username select your page from dropdown menu and enter the desired username.

  • thank you Pauline and Moin!!

so just to confirm I can’t change my profile username to something else and then use webdesignme for my business page?  I’m not trying to use webdesignme for both. I don’t really care what the user name for my personal profile page is.

If I selected the profile in the drop down and changed it from webdesignme to something else would I not be able to then select the business page and then make that ‘webdesignme’ ?

  • You are using Facebook as webdesignme”   That’s just the identity you are wearing at that time to post to Pages and Timelines/walls. You have your personal identity (Michelle Bate) and your professional Page identity (webdesignme).  To post to other Pages, you can use either one of these identities, or the identity associated with any other page you admin (I have several).  However, identities associated with Pages cannot post to Timelines/walls.  You have to be using Facebook as your personal identity to do that.

That doesn’t help you a bit with the vanity URL, but that’s because they’re not related.

  • I’m going out on a limb based on what I see on my account.
    For the vanity URL:

Make sure you’re using Facebook as your personal identity.

    Go to your Account Settings.

    Go to General Settings.

    Select Username.

It should say that your URL is http://www.facebook.com/webdesignme. Facebook will let you change the vanity “username” part (the slug, to use a term from Wordpress) ONCE. If you’ve never changed it before, try changing it to something else. Enter your password to save it.

Try to change your Page vanity slug to webdesignme. If it doesn’t work right away, give it a day or so. If it still doesn’t work, try filing a problem report with the Facebook marketing team.

Again, I’m just guessing based on what I see on my account. I’m not about to change my personal slug :)

(I think part of the confusion is that Facebook is very muddy about the use of the word “username.”)

  • thanks for your help Kim

so I went into my profile account settings and changed my user name to michelle.webdesignme

then I tried changing my user name for my business page to webdesignme but it says it’s not available. but I’ll do what u suggest and give it a day or 2 – fingers crossed!

If nothing happens I might try and think of another username.
    any suggestions? :)

    ie.  webdesignme.newzealand  ?

really appreciate all your advice guys :)

  • so this is now my profile link – http://www.facebook.com/michelle.webdesignme

and if I go to http://www.facebook.com/webdesignme

    it says
The page you requested was not found.does this not mean that the username ‘webdesignme’ is available?

    ummm

  • I’d give it time to go through the system.  I’m betting that if you can’t snag it in a day or two, someone in tech support or marketing can probably give you a hand if you explain the situation.

  • sorry but one last question – how do u get hold of tech support for FB?

  • @webdesignme @kimberleyaroper

I think you’re missing a vital part here. It all depends on how many friends and likes Michelle has on her two pages. Michelle please let me have the url of your personal profile and your page so that I can have a quick look.

If you’re lucky there’s an easy solution.

    Jorgen

  • hi Jogen

I really hope I haven’t stuffed this up!

    my profile page was: http://www.facebook.com/webdesignme

but I really want that url for my business page which is currently – http://www.facebook.com/pages/webdesignme/113077452054930

so I changed my profile url to:http://www.facebook.com/michelle.webdesignme

thinking that it might then free up ‘webdesignme’ for my page.

but when I tried changing my page url to ‘webdesignme’ afterwards it kept telling me it was unavailable :(

    hope you can help! :)

  • @jorgenpoulsen:  No, I haven’t missed that at all.  Marketing is prohibited on Timelines.  It’s not a matter of picking one or the other; it’s a matter of moving the brand to the page you CAN brand.

  • @webdesignme:  Facebook doesn’t make this easy, I know …

    Bug Report page:  https://www.facebook.com/help/contact.php?show_form=pages_bug

(It’s not a bug, but it’s kind of a missing feature … what you’re trying to amend is this:  https://www.facebook.com/help/?faq=203523569682738 .  You don’t have a actually have a security problem because you “own” both URLs, and Facebook should be able to accommodate that on the basis of you being able to convert a personal account to a Page:  https://www.facebook.com/help/?faq=116067818477568#How-do-I-convert-my-personal-account-to-a-Facebook-Page? .  I’d ask nicely.)

  • @kimberleyaroper yes, you have missed it. I’m well aware of what Michelle is trying to do.

I’m am very well aware that marketing is prohibited on personal profiles (timelines) according to paragraph 4 section 4 of Facebook’s T&Cs. I deal with this issue and the issue that @webdesignme is facing every single day.

In any event Andrea Vahl and Amy Porterfield will disagree with you and I have already had exchanges with Andrea about this as I feel that Amy has gone too far but Facebook has done nothing so perhaps it’s not as black and white as you think it is.

Anyway, what is important for me is to help Michelle solve her problem.

What she needs to do is

    1) change the name back to webdesignme2) convert her personal profile to a page. 3) merge the two pages

Since she has 217 friends they will be converted to fans. Her existing page has 78 fans. When she merge the two pages the page with the most likes will be the continuing page. So if she can change the name back to webdesigme then her new merged page will be http://www.facebook.com/webdesignme and she will have295 fans.

    There you go Kim.

Michelle, step 1 – 3 is not for the faint of heart. Happy to help you. If you want me help then link up with me on skype. Id jorgen-poulsen.

  • @webdesignme
You can turn your personal page into a Like page… This is always an option…

How do I convert my personal account to a Facebook Page? If you’d like to convert your personal account to a Page, click here.

When you convert your personal account to a Facebook Page, we’ll transfer your current profile picture and add all your friends and subscribers as people who like your Page. We’ll also make your account’s username the Facebook web address for your Page.

No other content will be carried over to your new Page, so be sure to save any important content before beginning your migration.

To avoid losing important content, we recommend taking these steps before you convert your personal account:

    1. Download your profile (timeline) information. You can download a file that contains all of your sent and received messages and all of the photos and videos you’ve uploaded to Facebook.
    2. Appoint a new group admin to any groups you manage. The account you’re converting will lose these admin rights during the conversion process.
    I hope this was helpful…

  • Hi Jogen

Thanks again for your help. I think I understand what you’re suggesting I do but you’re right – it is not for the faint hearted :) And I don’t think that I’m faint hearted but I’m just not sure merging my business page and profile together would be such a good idea – I use them both too much for very different reasons. I’d probably rather put up with annoying long link if I have to. Such a shame that facebook can’t be a tiny bit more flexible.

Kim – thank you for those links. I did send a message to facebook very nicely asking if anything can be done about my situation. I’m not holding my breath but you never know :)

thanks again everyone and I’ll let you know how I get on.

  • @webdesignme Hi Michelle, It makes no sense to me why you would want to have two different pages for the same brand but that’s entirely up to you.

I think you will shock the world if you get a reply from Facebook.

@kevinhaszard unfortubately it’s not as simple as you suggest especially if she wants to merge the two pages – which she apparently doesn’t want to do.

Anyway, good luck with whatever you do.

  • Hi Jorgen – I don’t want to have 2 different pages for the same brand.
I just want to keep my personal profile separate from my business page.
I just didn’t think merging those 2 together would be a good idea for me which is what I thought you were suggesting.

  • Michelle, I took it that you wanted to keep personal and professional separate (I do the same thing).  I’m quite sure a lot of my friends wouldn’t appreciate being converted to fans without consent.  I know I wouldn’t.

Facebook might not reply, but they might quietly make the change for you.  They’ve done it for me for other things.
