Change my page name? (12 posts)

  • I recently ‘cliamed’ a facebook page that was for our business but we didn’t set it up so the page name is not 100% what we want it to be. I went through the claim process just fine but now Facebook won’t let me change the name of the page so that I can merge it with our current page. I received an auto response saying ‘Additionally, please note we are not supporting username changes at this time. We apologize for any inconvenience.

What should I do? Has anyone else been dealing with this?

  • @ashleyhyde

You can only change the Page name with less than 200 likes.  Here are the instructions - https://www.facebook.com/help/?faq=271607792873806
If you have more, you can’t change it.
What do you mean by merge exactly?  You can’t merge two accounts.  Here is some info from Facebook on that - https://www.facebook.com/help/?faq=203498356357867
    Hope it helps!

  • Yes, merge.. You can merge two of your fan pages together, if they have the same or similar enough names as well as the same address.

  • You cannot merge duplicate accounts but you can merge duplicate pages

  • @ashleyhyde

Ah, gotcha.  Here’s the link to merge Pages - https://www.facebook.com/help/search/?q=merging+pages

  • O @iamconsulting if only it were that simple.. The ‘mere duplicate pages’ button does not show up because the page names are not similar enough, both pages have exactly the same address but unfortunately with the names being so different there is nothing that can be done until the name change is approved but because Facebook does not allow name changes on pages with more than 200 likes I am stuck between a rock and a hard place..

Hmm, sounds like it.  The only other thing I can think of is transferring content from one page to another and asking everyone that liked your page to join the other page.  It’s not easy and you likely won’t get everyone but unless you get the name change, you really are stuck.  Have you tried contacting Facebook?  On occasion, you can get lucky.  I’ve had similar issues with clients and I’ve gotten some help from Facebook but it doesn’t happen often.  It might also be because I admin over 50 pages…

  • That is a tough one, @ashleyhyde!  I think  @iamconsulting is right, you may just need to try transferring the fans by posting things like, This page will be shut down, please likes over here ____.  But that doesn’t always work so well either.

The other thing to do is to just keep submitting requests to Facebook in different ways.  Which if you have the time, isn’t too bad.  But I would still try to get people converted by posting if you can.  Maybe do a Promoted Post on that one.

  • One of the pages that I manage has over 9000 fans. In the spring we changed the name of our company and I was able to successfully change the name of our page. The only thing I could not change was the URL. We went from MilitaryHandbag.com to Military Apparel Company our FB address is still /militaryhandbag.

We had tried creating a new page when the name changed but it was so hard to get our fans to move over, so when I found that we could change the name it was a lifesaver. When you submit the request they will ask for some type of proof such as a bill. All I did was submit a copy of our new business cards.

Each of our reps were also able to successfully change the name of their pages also.

  • Thanks everyone, especially @andrea-vahl for the advice!! I was up emailing back and fourth with Facebook until 4am, I did just what you said submitted a bunch of different requestss with different documentation and eventually they gave me the name change. It was strange because the email that I got from them (finally) said:
After a review, it’s been determined that the “original page name” Page name does not meet the Facebook Pages Guidelines. To adhere to these guidelines, your Page has been renamed to: “what I asked for”.”

@lorithueme As far as I know you can now change or request a change for your custom URL.. Good Luck

  • Yay!  @ashleyhyde  So glad that you got that changed.  It’s just good to know that it can happen – I have so many people that get no where with Facebook.

Yes, you can request a one-time URL change as well from the Basic Information area after you click Edit Page in the Admin panel.   @lorithueme

  • Yes, I knew I could change the URL but since I mainly use a QR code or the FB symbol I didn’t bother. It’s too long to write out all the time :)

    Thanks anyway!
