Can We Block Facebook Ads from Displaying on our Personal Profiles? (7 posts)

  • A dear friend told me that she inadvertently enabled an ad that displays in the right side of her personal profile’s news stream, and now her screen looks like “a billboard field.”

Ads that seem to be larger than the normal size display on the right side of her news stream, as well as along the right side of photos she opens to see comments.

In addition to sponsored Facebook ads, she’s now seeing “unsponsored” ads inside the comments box, making it hard to read the comments.

I know Facebook has made recent changes to the way they do ads, but I’m not up to speed yet. Would appreciate any insights and links you can offer.

    Key questions:

    1. Can you block ads from displaying in the sidebar of your Home page?
    2. Can you block them from displahing in the Comments fields?
    3. Is there an “undo” when you inadvertently click an ad?

It sounds like she gave access to an app which is adding some additional ads.  I know there is a Facebook customizer (for personal profiles) that does this but other than that, she’d have to go through the list and figure out which app is causing the issue.
Check out this page here for browser blocking info - https://www.facebook.com/help/?faq=151337961603332
That may help but I would suggest she go through and unable the app.

On the left-hand side of your news feed, it should have an “Apps” section.  Hover about the word “apps” and click “more”.  This brings you to a list of all of the apps you have enabled.  There is a little edit pencil next to each app that you can click to remove the app.
It should be relatively simple to find the app that’s causing the issue if she knows when the problem started occurring since they have the day you last used them.

There will be a few she can’t remove that are Facebook apps like “messages” they would not be causing the issue.
You can also edit the app’s settings on some apps.  Click on the edit pencil as mentioned above and click “edit settings”.  There is a little X you can click on to remove specific settings within the app.  Some setting you can’t remove.

  • There are a lot of nasty programs out there that do this, @laurachristianson – good suggestions from  @iamconsulting on getting rid of bad apps.  She can also reference this site on Facebook for more info:  https://www.facebook.com/help/adware

Didn’t think to check apps — good idea.

    @andrea-vahl

Thanks for the adware link — will look into that, as well.

  • @laurachristianson make sure you tell people that there is no way to see who last viewed your profile. Clicking on that app installs this virusy advertising software.

you can tell you have it if there are pop-up adverts or things that play sound automatically.

  • @laurachristianson

    Glad I could help!

  • @richardmclaughlin – Good to know, Mac. Thanks!
