Best time to Post (16 posts)

  • Owning my own business means that I have to do marketing when I can find the time, which is normally 5 am.  This is when I do my FB posts, blogging, etc.

I started to think, though, am I missing out on a large part of my audience by posting so early?

What have you found is the ideal time to post for your business?

P.S. I am in the pet services industry.

  • @marionwesterling Wow, good question! I think that is on everyone’s mind one time or another. I too am most creative in the mornings however, I have learned to let my blog post sit in my editorial calendar for a day or 2 as a draft. Then when I have did a once over to make sure the post is in order I then schedule the post for when my site gets peak traffic.

  • MORning is  easiest  for me too…but  last week i did post in the  evening  and got  lots of  response….so  im  thinking i  should  post  both times….my  target market is probably  a lot like  yours…homeowners mainly…

  • @marionwesterling Although there are professional tools like crowdbooster that analyze your followers’ behavior and give you recommendations like when to post your messages, in my experience you should try getting to know your fans or followers and try to understand their workflow (that is, of course, easier when you don’t have a 10k fan base…).
Have a look into their profiles, look for job descriptions. Are they 9-5 office guys or on the run all day? Is there a certain time during the day with a significant growth of interaction? When should they have the time for reading your posts?
To give an example: There is one FB page I manage for a customer that has a 9-5 office day routine, meaning I get the most response in the morning from 8-9 (starting up the computer), around noon (having a quick look before leaving for lunch) and in the afternoon from 4-5 (nothing more to do, what’s up online). But that might only be true for me.
Anyways, good luck for your business!

  • I agree it’s best to get to know your audience and their activity level. Most of my likes are on the east coast (EST) so I find if I post at my usual time of 5:00 am (PST), I get activity.

I can’t remember the source (of course!) but I read one metric that stated evenings are best (after kids go to bed) and Saturdays around noon…

All good responses above, but you might try an interactive post asking your readers to comment on when they would prefer you to post and at what time they are most likely to be reading.

If its about engagement, engage them. Maybe you can write an article about your day, and when you find the time to post and relate it to their reading posts. Maybe a poll or survey would do the trick.

    Just a a thought…

  • I personally made the experience that posts I publish for a client (a winery) on Tuesdays, Wednesdays or Thursdays between 11 am and 2 pm create the most interaction. I have to mention though that the business and the majority of its fans are based in Europe. It seems people use their lunch break to check FB status updates. I also learned that in our case weekends are no success – especially when the weather is good…

    Hi Marion,

This question is probably asked the most often in social media and blogging.  Figuring out when your audience is most active is really the key here.  No one can tell you what times will work for your business unless they are looking at your analytics.  There are some different industries that can publish at similar times but what will work for you will depend on your audience.
With that said, I took a look at your Facebook page and….

You do have some activity on your page.  It seems like the majority of people respond between 8am-12pm and sometime between 5pm-6pm.  I think posting for your early audience (posting around 6am-7am) and doing another post for your later audience (around 3pm-4pm) would be a good idea.
This is just an observation of the times people respond to your posts and what time you’re posting.  You’d have to look at your analytics to really see when your audience is most active and play to that time frame and of course experiment with varying times to ensure you’re reaching as much of your audience as possible.
You can use hootsuite to schedule posts to go out at those times and then engage when you have the opportunity.  It will keep your social presence consistent which is vitally important when growing an audience and staying relevant.

  • Hi Marion,

Here at Mad Dog Lola Web Services, we were wondering exactly the same thing. So we did an experiment. You can see it here on our Facebook page.Basically we did 4 posts during the day, including my 5am special and looked for what response we got from our fans. The 2 posts later in the day both received “Likes” and were commented on whereas the early ones were just not seen. We were using Networked Blogs to publish articles from our website but we have since returned to manual postings after 12:00.

    Hope this helps.

    John Mayers

  • Hi Marion at Webbon we did what John Mayers did with one more layer: we did different kinds of post (status, videos, links, polls, etc.) over a period of a month to figure out best timing and best type of post for our fans. We found out that during the weekdays we get a higher response if we post right before lunchtime.

  • Whatever you decide on “when” to post, I think using the hootsuite option or something like Buffer could make it easier for you to schedule your posts. You can gather what you want to post and distribute it when you want to. I think there are possibly even anlytics. Making it a once a day time to handle that task. From there, you’re just responding to comments.

  • I wrote a blog post on this very topic last month (sorry it’s in French). But in it, I refer to Dan Zarella, who I believe is a reference on this, and you may want to read his material, blog posts and books.

    Cheers,

  • Thanks for the insight!  I’ve been on Facebook for a few years now, but am just getting hot and heavy when it comes to my business, so I appreciate the help!

  • What an interesting discussion. Very helpful all the responses and I love the interaction. I have two questions: 1) how often do you post? Some audience are very “sensitive” as to how many times during the day you post on your FB page.  2) I will like to know when my fans are the most engaged with my pages. Is there a specific tool, insight, and/or method to internally know the time when there is heavy traffic on “likes”, “comments”, “shares”, etc on your page?

Thank you very much for your help, tips, tricks and especially your time! Happy Friday.

  • Sadly, I looked at crowdbooster . . . but they want $39/month from me since I have 3 pages, so I’m looking at just going by my own experience.  My posts get more action when I post around noon and 5 so far.
