Best Length of time to run a contest? (30 posts)

  • Has anyone played with different time periods  to see how long is too long to have a contest running?  I’ve been playing around with trials on our Facebook page to see if I could find the best app for me to use (that was still cost efficient since I have to run contests on 3 pages).  I finally decided on shortstack.com.  The last trial I ran was for just over 2 days.  I ended up with 24 entries and most of those (18) were within the 1st 24 hours.

I’d like to hear what contests have worked best for you . . . and how long you run them.

  • You must be telepathic because I was thinking of asking the same question!

I have been working with a gentleman who recommended offerpop.com to me. It’s free for business who have less than 500 likes.

They have pricing for 14 days and monthly programs. I’ll try the free monthly program and see how it goes.

  • I’m actually cool  with Shortstack.  It does what I want (a lot), creates easy to understand interfaces, etc . . .

My question is more about types of contests that generate the most interest among current fans as well as gain more new fans. and how long is the best length of time to run any certain type of contest.

With golf courses, pretty much anything can run . . . photo contests, “My Story” contests, random entry contests (give us your email, random winner chosen), etc . . .

  • @dedimason @daveholmes Hi Dedi & Dave

I would totally recommend ShortStack. They have an amazing amount of free content available and you can run contests very cheaply. I have run quite a few with them and have had no complaints.

As for the question: it all depends on your contest. Anywhere from a week to a month is an average timeframe. But you can find out more on running contests in a recent blog post I posted on that exact topic.

Also, please be aware of Facebook’s contest guidelines. Here is a simple version (again from my blog).

Good luck with the contest! And if you need help with it, I am available. :)

  • @russellallert, thanks so much for your valuable info and insight about Facebook’s contest guidelines.

I’ve heard of some apps leaving you stranded. By this I mean that, for example, if I were to use ShortStack’s design tools and later stop using the service would I lose what I used the tools to create?

Or am I missing the point of those tools?

Forgive the newbie questions, but I gotta start somewhere.  :)

  • ShortStack is free as long as you have under 2000 page Likes. So if you are under then you are all good.

They do charge you a little for running contests to store your entrants info, but you can easily export this info so you will always have a copy of it.

I haven’t had an issue with them at all and they are easily contactable.

    I hope that helps.

    Russell

  • @daveholmes ~ if I understand correctly, you’re asking if you’d have the code to be able to move those pages/contests someplace else.  From what I’ve seen so far, you don’t have your code.

Personally, I’m only using them temporarily until I develop code of my own to run them off my own sites.  Running contests and such that I’ve developed through them will help me see what I want in my own design.

I chose to pay for my service through shortstack while I am using it because 1)  I liked that they had my entries on a database that I could access, and 2)  I want to do voting and photo contests . . . which I would need their databases for.

  • I understand. It makes sense, actually.

I have no plans or time to develop coding myself, so if this takes off I’ll just pay them to handle it, I guess.

    Thanks for the info.

  • @russellallert I have a question about

    “No Notification Through Facebook

You cannot notify winners through Facebook. This includes via messages, chat or posts. This means that you will need to collect their email address so you can contact any winners.”

    So, the following is unacceptable?

Thanks to everyone who tried that last contest app out. I liked it ~ it didn’t seem to confuse anyone and all entries were received (that I know about, some people didn’t post and let me know). Looks like we’ll be using that app to do contests :)

We do have a winner for the second time (since I accidentally had it pick one yesterday, LOL). Jeff Stolaruk ~ check your email to find out about claiming your prize. Congrats!

Next question . . . what do you think about photo contests? Keep in mind that most of the ones you see (where people are “Liking” pics to vote) are NOT LEGAL by Facebook’s terms. The app software we just used will allow us to run photo contests. Anyone have an idea for a themed photo contest that we can do a trial run with?

  • @dedimason Hi Dedi

I believe it’s okay to let your fan-base know who won, as long as you contact them with the details via email.

I have run a photo contest before and it worked really well! I managed to grow the page Likes by 40% and the “Talking About This” was the highest they had ever had.

Image contests work well because people tend to share them a lot more than any other posts.

I would love to help you out with a theme, Dedi. Please contact me and we can have a chat about it if you like – no charge! :)

    Russell Allert

  • @russellallert  LOL . . . that was actually part of my fan page post, I should have put it all in quotes.  Since it’s not season yet, I didn’t want to throw a theme out that no one would have pics of.  Once season starts, I’ll give them a week (or two) to take pics based on a certain theme, then start a contest.  We need new pics of each hole, so I’ll probably base the first contests (in season) around each hole.

When I announce the winner like that, I always tell them to check their email for the info.  That way Facebook knows that their prize is not coming through the site.

  • @dedimason I am a little confused, Dedi. What do you mean by “Hole”. I am not sure I know what your business is. :)

    Russell

  • @russellallert ~ OOPS!  We have golf courses :)

I’m betting it makes more sense now :)

  • @dedimason Haha! Totally. :)

It’s agreat idea doing a different theme for each hole. Did you want help coming up with the themes?

  • @dedimason

It really depends on the prize.  If you’re giving away a free coffee, not more than a day.  If you’re giving away something bigger like an iPad, 2 weeks or so.  I gave away a few vacations with a client and those ran 3 months with a lot of success however after month 2 the entries were barely trickling in.  People don’t typically want to wait a long time to receive the prize they signed up for but are willing to wait if it’s good.

  • @russellallert _ I’m always open to suggestion, but most of my themes will come from a group of customers we have . . . they’ve always got great ideas and I like to be able to let other customers know that we’re using ideas that came from customers.  Encourages more to participate :)

@iamconsulting ~ That’s how I’d been thinking . . . mostly, I’ll be giving away free round of golf, possibly a membership (if I can get the owners to agree).  Golf season is in ‘full swing’ for only about 20 weeks, so I have to make the most of it!

  • @dedimason Sounds good! :) The prizes you mentioned sounds good as well.

  • Hi! I handle social media for a hotel group and we want to start contests on FB. I contacted Wildfire and although they have a great product it does seem very pricey to start with for their White Collar program. We have under 100 fans on our page and wanted to get some advice on how to start with a vacation giveaway.

    Any advice??

  • @karendecker http://www.shortstack.com has a free subscription but I chose to use a paid subscription ($15/month) to try them out.  The paid version gives you access to their databases, which is a nice addition, making it all very simple.  I will be upgrading to the $30/month version now that I’ve given them a try and know that I like their system.  I have 3 active pages and more in the works, so I needed to be able to use the app on multiple pages at once.

  • Thanks Dedi! I did check them out and the prices are definitely reasonable. Did you run a sweepstakes and was it successful?

  • I use Rafflecopter.com.  I love it because it is free and the entrants are the promoters.  I use it for book launches and the results have been very good.

  • @karendecker Considering the fact that I’m just now beginning to encourage any page participation, yes it was successful.  I ran two trial contests that lasted only 1 or two days.  The second one got 24 entries (out of 120 fans) and netted us 10 new fans ~ that’s the trial that I ran using shortstack’s apps.  Loved it :)

Now I’m running that sane (fan reveal) contest on the other two course pages and I’ve started a photo contest on the page that I try everything out on . . . not sure how that will go yet as it hasn’t received an entry but it also just started and has a theme.  Hope it gets some attention!

The fan reveal contests have already gotten a few entries per page and gotten us a couple of “Likes” ~ I’m thinking that it would really take off if I were running targeted Facebook ads, but it’s just not the right time of year for us (golf courses in Michigan) to start those yet.  Late April will be best, probably.

Fair warning, however.  Even though I only paid for that initial subscription a couple of days ago, when I upgraded today, they charged me the full $30.00 for the upgrade, rather than only $15 for the rest of the month.  Choose your plan the first time you upgrade!

  • @janisfriesler ~ I tried rafflecopter.  I didn’t like that my fans were confused.  Some thought they had entered when they hadn’t.  I wouldn’t have known had it not been a trial, but I asked them to comment when they entered.  I also like the wide variety I have with shortstack . . . I can even rework the css if I want to.

  • I never had that problem, but I will make sure I check.  Thanks for the input.

  • I had always heard that northsocial and wildfireapp were the best for contests – anyone used them?

  • I am looking to use Wildfire at the moment…

My initial phone call with someone from Wildfire quoted me a discounted rate of $2,500 for a 3 month promotion having their logo displayed on my page. However, I was passed to someone else and they quoted me a price of $30,000 a year for their “white collar” program!! I have another call tomorrow and will see what they are thinking. I know that these rates are not in my companies social media budget so I am trying to explore some other avenues.

I do plan to run FB ads when we decide which 3rd party source to use.

Shortstack seems like a good way to go since we are just starting with Sweepstakes.

Thanks for your feedback Dedi! Karen

  • @Russellallert

Is there a free app to organize contest for a fan page with more than 2K?What are the key points to remember while organizing a theme based photo contest? I have run my previous contests from few days to few weeks but each time I see my fan base decreasing. How to make a contest go viral?

  • @suchigoyal Hi Suchi

Most apps will handle any number of fans. I just prefer ShortStack.

And you don’t make a contest go viral… they do or they don’t.

If you need some help I am happy for us to work together on something. :)

    Russell

  • While I haven’t been using FB for contests or sweepstakes, all of our data from other media has pointed to shorter competitions always getting more bang for the buck. People are rarely willing to wait for things these days, so the more immediate the better. Obviously the bigger the prize the longer you can extend it, but you don’t want to give people time to forget about it. In the fast paced world we live in, I think any competition lasting more than 2 weeks will begin to lose interest. Just my 2cents.

  • @RusellAllert,

I certainly need an expert’s guidance for my Facebook activities but looking at your consultation prices like Price: $299, Price: $49, Price: $99 SORRY i can’t afford that.

I am looking for few free tips because this is what clubs like this are meant for. If you can guide me, it would be a great help…
