Attitudes towards personal use of Social Media at Work (10 posts)

  • HI everyone,

I am a MSc student at Salford Business School in the UK, and I am doing my dissertation about Attitudes regarding Personal Use of Social Media at work in both users and companies side.

I was wondering if there is a chance to contribute by answering the surveys:
One for users and one for firms.
It would be very helpful if you could share it too.
You can have a look at them in this following links (from Google Drive):

    I thank you in advance.

  • i have   workers and  they arent   geting paid  to play   on their   phones or  chat on their phones  or  have  fun with their  friends on social media….. im pretty sure that would  be  most employers   view ….

the phones have  changed  everything   tho…. all the  temptations  are right in their pockets…

  • @mustafa-sahin Ther are so many legal ramifications that come up for the employer when employees use social media on company time. We are just starting to see the start of the legal fights and PR nightmares to come.

  • @annfurnivall

I totally agree with you but how to deal with the future generation, the one who are studying right now and will become part of the workplace.

What can be done, especially for small business to monitor this. Or what it is actually done?

I work part-time and most of the staff are young. We deal with service encounter as we sell Ice cream (very nice flavours) and they are always on the phone checking up facebook, viber ect… You name it and they have it  (this is how I came up with the topic for my research).

Even though, would it depend on the industry sector too? Because as some of the academic researches and practitioners recommend the use of it to get real benefit, using it could damage the business such as Dominos or I have seen a recent newspaper article that a CEO tweeted some information that was not meant to be said.

Could you tell me if you met a situation where you faced an employee checking up their personal Social Media sites?

  • @amyhallbiz Could you tell me more about it?

  • @mustafa-sahin James Wu, an employment lawyer, writes a column which keeps me up to date on all the latest with employment law and social media. http://windmillnetworking.com/author/james-wu/

  • @mustafa-sahin   what  does  the  company   say about  the phone use?   is it   just  accepted ? who makes the rules?

forus  its not acceptable….heres my latest  example…a new young worker, a painter…  working and i walk by and  see him on the phone instead of painting…this  guy has a  fairly good job with us and insurance, about  20 yrs old……  ….  he was told if he got on it again  he would  be fired….2 other workers  told him  at my request…i think he got the message…

the other workers are older and know the policy…i think  they  take  calls   a bit….but its  kind of under  control  for us….

once in a while  i see teens on a job  , like   in  kiosks in malls, blatently use their phones  and  totally  bored and  not  doing their  jobs at all …..my feeling is  that  they are on the road  to failure and  bad  results in the job world….  who  would want them?   what  they think is   due to them/or ok on the  job , is   not  going  to work  most places….

we are small with about  10 employees….  so  they  know  what the  rules  are…we  dont have   much  written down….

  • @annfurnivall Excuse me for my late reply. I am dealing with my literature review and spend a lot of time finding relevant journal articles. They aren’t so many.

Well the management is not happy about this, but they do not really take action. And it seems that the staff has the power nowadays because they complain about supervisors everytime and when it is the reverse, they give a warning note and nobody really bother about it.
The rules are the same since the beginning. And to be honest I have been working there three years and I have never came across any specific rules.
But in my opinion they manage from a deficit. They always search for short cuts and they don’t treat the employees the same.
For example, one day I received a complaint from a customer. We have a few emplacements in that mall and she came to me and ordered ice cream for her kids. As usual, I always tend to treat people the same, with a smile and here to serve. While paying she complained about the employee from the other kart and saying she has been rude to her. I try to sort her out, I even apology for the other staff, I have ask her if she could wait for the manager, that I could call him. I ask her if she wanted free toppings (it s only 10 pence each topping). She left and said she will never go again to that employee and she’ll only come to me when she’d see me.
Afterwards the manager comes and I explain the situation. He told that employee do not do this things and it’s the customer fault as usual. (wow I said to myself when it is me, they do not lose a second to come to me).

Anyway they let us use our phones but for them to call us, or for us to call them as we have 5 emplacement dispatched. They don’t want to invest. I already suggested them two years ago that they should do it to control. And on top told them that it was not fair to use my personal materials as I do not get any returns. :)

Concerning the Social Media they have just started to use Facebook something that I have asked last in 2011 why they do not do it :) .

  • @amyhallbiz

I have quickly check it and this website is a golden mine. Thank you very much, I really appreciate it.

  • @amyhallbiz
