Are you using Tabsite with your facebook page? (23 posts)

  • Tabsite is an app you can get to use with your facebook page. I am trying to use it but not clear how. The learning curve for me seems big or maybe I just need a person looking over my shoulder. So, if you know its benefits and how to make it help, please share.

  • I did try it out a while ago @deairby but I don’t actively use it.  Have you watched the tutorials  http://www.tabsite.com/documentation?  They do have some good videos.  But the problem with a lot of things that can be heavily customized is that they can then become fairly complex.  Where are you stuck?  The design?  (that’s where I always get stuck :)  Could there be another easier app that meets your needs?

  • @deairby – great app! I’ve got a project that I need a multi page “app” that I’ll experiment with to see if it makes sense to me. Right now, I’ve used Wix which does a flash page with mobile friendly alternative which looks icky. I’d rather have something real. Let me beat on it & I’ll get back to you.

  • @designbykiltz @andrea-vahl thanks for the comments, is Wix a website hosting place. I have a friend who has her website on something like that. Yes, it does have flash which is why she using it.

  • @deairby, Wix is a service where you can build your own flash website, and they host them. They also have where you can build Facebook pages – they host them, & have a FB app where you can pull the page in. If you go to my FB page & click on the “nominations” link on the left you’ll see my use of it.
It works, I just don’t like it b/c smart phones, iPads, etc don’t use flash, and there’s no way of customizing what those people will see.

  • @designbykiltz I “liked” you on fb. Checked out the nominations link. It works well, I see. I am going to need to sit back and analyze everything I’m learning on SME. I’m almost at the info overload!!! Thanks so much for taking the time to leave comments.

  • We use Wix for our website.  What I like about it is the look is very contemporary.  My partner, who is the tech genius, like working with it, although he did grumble about the flash issue.  http://www.slossweiner.com/

@designbykiltz, loved that nominations tab.  Good job!

  • Never ever use a flash website, for one it takes for ever to load and if you don’t have a mobile version of your website it will not show up on a iphone, most smartphones are doing away with flash capabilities so it is a dying breed. On another subject everyone needs a mobile website, not a mobilized version but an actual mobile website, Google is in the process of removing sites from their search engines if they don not have a mobile website also, they say mobile is the future and if a business is not mobile then they are not a serious business

  • @rlmosca Wow, Rick, thanks for the heads up. Are you maintaining a stable site as well as a mobile one? How do you create a mobile only one?

  • I agree with Rick – stay away from flash for a website. While Wix does have a “non-flash” aspect, it’s ugly & you can’t adjust it. I used it mainly because I needed something quick that looked nice & the other apps out there were too cumbersome to work with. For the voting aspect I’m going to take a look at the solution that @deairby had originally asked about.

@rlmosca – A question that I’m looking for an answer for. Is there a solution for a mobile website that runs off a CMS platform that also runs the main website? The majority of my clients don’t have the time, manpower or money to maintain two separate sites. I’m looking at responsive web design now to fill that answer, but if there’s another solution, I’d like to hear it.

  • @deairby Yes I have a main site and a mobile site for my clients, I have my developers build a Mobile Site for my clients.

  • @designbykiltz You asked…A question that I’m looking for an answer for. Is there a solution for a mobile website that runs off a CMS platform that also runs the main website?

“There are solutions that can be run from one platform, Wordpress, but I highly recommend against this because when you build a mobile site using Wordpress it takes much longer to load, this is due to all of the processes that Wordpress loads in the background!”

Your question…The majority of my clients don’t have the time, manpower or money to maintain two separate sites. I’m looking at responsive web design now to fill that answer, but if there’s another solution, I’d like to hear it.

“This is a great reason why you offer to maintain it for them, at a cost of course!
If they don’t have the money, manpower or time and don’t want you to maintain it for them then look for clients who are serious in building there business!”

  • @rlmosca Thanks for your response. My main focus with my business is to work with small companies — many times they end up the underdog, plagued with getting burned because of a lack of knowledge. They don’t have the budget for outsourcing & must learn how to do it on their own. A website is in addition to all the other hats they wear & their time is limited.

And, I have no desire to keep 2 separate websites in sync even if they could pay me. In my mind, that defeats the purpose of what a CMS is supposed to do. I’m thinking of experimenting with pulling the information from the same database but feeding it to 2 separate installations of a CMS, one for regular & one for mobile. The content would be dealt with separately but the 2 needs met.

Do you have any documentation for what you shared about Google pulling sites without mobile support? I would love to use that in the classes I teach to answer the “why do I need a mobile site”. But, I only include documented material in my classes. If you could point me to your resource on that, it would be great.

  • @designbykiltz @rlmosca What an awesome conversation! Thanks for all the information.

  • Sorry I caught the tail end of the discussion on flash but I would echo what @rlmosca said about iPhone and web sites in general. Loading times and browser issues pale besides Flash compromising SEO, W3C validation, Usability, and causing problems (and expense) upgrading content.

No, I have an insider I rely on but you could tell them that over 50% of local searches are performed using mobile devices and if they don’t have a mobile site there business will not show up and they will miss out on potential customers.

You can show them this report… http://www.digitalbuzzblog.com/2011-mobile-statistics-stats-facts-marketing-infographic/

  • @rlmosca awesome link, Rick, thanks for sharing

  • @deairby That is what we do here, help one another!

  • @rlmosca Rick, you are a top helper with so much to share, thanks!

  • @deairby You have been my role model!

  • I’m not sure if this is what you’re looking for @deairby, but have you tried Pagemodo?  I’m using their free version for now, as it meets the simple needs for my photography business.  My Welcome Page can be viewed here as an example: Unveiled Photography.  You can obviously increase functionality with different pricing levels of the paid version.  It was also very easy to set-up.

I’ve also used Involver to add Twitter and RSS access within Facebook without having to leave the Page.  Again, free version for basics and two accounts and paid version for further options.

    Hope this helps.

  • :) @rlmosca

  • @koopy went to your fb welcome page, looks great, thanks
