Another drop in Reach as of September (6 posts)

  • Sorry if this has already been posted but I received Heather’s blog today and wanted to pass it along. The first drop occurred at the end of August…

Three Recent Facebook Upgrades That Nonprofits Need to Know Abouthttp://nonprofitorgs.wordpress.com/2012/10/14/three-recent-facebook-upgrades-that-nonprofits-need-to-know-about/?goback=%2Egde_1172477_member_175204272
Excerpt:1) Facebook has decreased Pages’ Reach… again.

The last week of September I noticed that the Reach on that status updates that I posted on the Nonprofit Organizations Facebook Page had dropped significantly. As far as I can guess, on average only about 6-9% of my fans now get my status updates posted to their News Feed which is about half the 16% that Facebook announced in March. And with the exception of buying advertising, there’s very little you can do to expand your Reach organically more than 3-5%. Facebook has confirmed this change, but as usual the specifics are shrouded in mystery so deciphering any absolutes about how the change effects all pages is impossible.

  • @kc_kreative I feel your pain, Kristy, but at the end of the day you have to play with the rules that Facebook set (which is why I always tell my clients to use Facebook to drive traffic to their own website where they can control the medium).

The reasons Facebook have done this are secondary to what we, as content produces, need to do to reach as many people as we can. And that is even better and more targeted content.

Also, we need to start looking at who our fans are. Who is actually liking our page – are these the right people? And, if not, what can we do to attract the right people for our niche?

  • @russellallert Very true Russ! Still it’s good to be aware as it makes Facebook a less valuable driver if the exposure isn’t there. You also must explain to your clients if they’re used to seeing higher numbers in the reports. I find it ironic that they change Edge Rank at the same time they start pushing promoted posts for $7. I mean, why would I pay $7 to promote my personal post to my friends :) They may not care that I got a new washer/dryer!

  • @kc_kreative Totally agree, Kristy… I guess I have read so much on this that I am “over-exposed” and just want to move on with what works.

We have had promoted post here in Australia for a while and to be honest I don’t see a big call for personal use on profiles. For $7 I think it might be cheaper just to call all your friends. :)

  • @russellallert LOL. What part of Australia? I was down long ago to Sydney, Gold Coast, Uluru and Alice Springs for a family vacay. Such a lovely country and I’m akin to Aussies and Kiwis for their equine affinity. Thanks for your input as always!

  • @kc_kreative I am in Brisbane, Kristy. :)
