Alternative Social Media Sites (7 posts)

  • We all know about the huge social networking sites like Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Google+, Pinterest……….but what are the best smaller sites? I have tried AdlandPro Community, SWOM, Home Business Network, APSense, MyNetworkingPro with mixed results…are there others you would recommend, possibly for certain target markets?

  • @ianclarke  It’s not necessarily about which niche network to apply time, effort and resources, but more so about knowing where the communities are that are relevant to you. All social media should be practiced from a monitoring and listening perspective first, before actually jumping into the fray.  This will save you time and money.  And the ‘big’ channels you describe don’t necessarily guarantee they are the right channels as all things are not the same for all people.  My advice, do some research and see where the communities are congregating that meets your needs.

  • I like participating within the large sites in smaller groups, @ianclarke  Like looking for good LinkedIn Groups or Facebook Groups to join.  Connecting on a targeted Tweetchat and that type of thing.  I think the hard thing with the smaller sites is they don’t always have a critical mass to keep the conversation flowing.  The other area I like to participate is in smaller forums like this.

  • Many thanks for your excellent advice Andrea. Much appreciated.

  • @danielmckean Many thanks for responding. You’re right….Facebook, Twitter and the rest are great time wasters unless you target your efforts towards a dedicated group or forum in your niche

  • I agree with @andrea-vahl because you don’t want to spread yourself too thin with all the networks you would have to keep up with, but I do need to get a little more involved in the smaller groups and this forum. Thanks for thread.
