adding a link behind images on the Facebook banner (37 posts)

  • Can anyone tell me (in really simple terminology) or point me in the right direction to add a link behind an image on the Facebook banner, eg by clicking on the image it takes you to an opt in box to sign up for something

  • Not sure what banner you are referring to, but, you can add a link to an image by using the following tag:

    <a href=”default.asp”><img src=”image-name.gif” alt=”Optimized Image Name” width=”xx” height=”xx” /></a>

    • Where the ”default.asp” is the location of the “opt in” sign-up link.
    • Where “src=”image-name.gif”" is the actual image name.
    • Where “alt=”Optimized Image Name”" is an optimized name that helps in search rankings.
    • Where “xx” are the actual width and height of the image.
    Hope this helps.

  • @dhsllc Do you have an example of this in action on Facebook?

  • @pollyb  You can’t make Facebook images/banners clickable. You could put a website reference in the description of the photo which would help point people to your signup page  But any Facebook photo will take you to the full photo when you click on it

Great reference code from @dhsllc but unfortunately you can’t add html code behind a Facebook photo.

  • @andrea-vahl  is correct, this wouldn’t work on the Facebook page banner or any album photo. However, if you have a page/tab that you manage and customize with HTML you can incorporate images or links that point where ever you want.

Say for instance you setup a default tab where you give insights about your business and one of the calls to action is invite visitors to subscribe, an image could link to to a page where subscribers would complete the registration. Some email programmers provide you with code where you could even include the form on the page where the user doesn’t have to go anywhere – just enter email address and click submit.

  • @pollyb @andrea-vahl am also pretty sure this can’t happen. But one way to put link on an image which redirects users to some tasks. for example: You can add an app like static iframe app, upload image, give link or simply write some html in the html box and call images from ftp host.

  • @moinshaikh @dhsllc @andrea-vahl

I was listening to a webinar yesterday from Amy Porterfield yesterday and I am almost sure she said this could be done and gave an example of a Facebook page where this was done – I will try to find the page for you – mind you, I could be wrong! :-)

    @jamesalonso

  • @pollyb thank you very much, in fact i am also in process, and will be doing an experiment. But i am right now in the process of checking for pro-cons and taking back up for the page and profile with which i am going to experiment. Again thank you for the kind hard work to find out that page you are talking about.

  • You can’t redirect from a FB banner.

  • @pollyb

I don’t think it can be done, but if you find an example where it works, please let us know.

  • @dhsllc @jamesalonso @andrea-vahl @moinshaikh @ndonelly

Hi Guys, here is a link to look at what I was trying to explain

    https://www.facebook.com/MortgageMarketingAnimals?sk=wall

They have images across the top and when you click on each of these you are directed to a link, hope this will make it clearer!

    Thanks

    Polly

  • @pollyb

Ah, that is different from what I thought you were talking about.

What the Animals have done is simply upload pic to their fanpage, and have them displayed across the top of their page.

The picture isn’t actually linked to anywhere, but they inserted a link into the comments on each picture.

  • @warrenveach

I knew I didn’t explain it properly! Is this easy enough for a non tekkie to do?

  • @pollyb

That is a clever use of the photo strip as @warrenveach indicated. I had seen something similar here: http://www.facebook.com/TofuriousPage?sk=wall

Goes to show, focus on a mission and you will figure out a way to make it work.

    This is great stuff. :)

  • @dhsllc

I thought so too Cynthia, simple but effective. At least I hope it’s simple to do!

  • @pollyb

It should be easy enough. I saw someone do this a while back and wanted to do it on my page, but have just never gotten around to it.

I’m not sure how you “lock” those pics in place so they always show and don’t rotate, but it shouldn’t be that hard to do.

  • Yep, @pollyb – that’s what I was talking about before with putting the link in the description and I love the way they created the pictures to point to the link!  Awesome!

  • @warrenveach  I do not know how to lock them, but I do know a work around. Add the 5 pics you want, then with every subsequent pic you upload, after it is put in the banner, hover over it. A little x will come up. Click it and the pic is removed from the banner but not the page.

  • @pollyb – aha… the photo strip – FB keeps changing the language.  Now they generally refer to the wide rectangle on the profile pages as the banner……yeah def put links in your descriptions of pix in photo strip – and just “Hover”  on pix you don’t want in the photo strip and hit Hide (doesn’t delete photo – just hides it from the photo strip…..

I’ve tried only loading 5 pictures and in the order I wanted them to appear and every other combination….I think it’s totally random how those 5 show up…I’m sure in time there will be an app for locking them in!

  • oops…just saw that  @abigailgorton mentioned the Hover & Hide technique!

  • thank you for the hard work, and yes, it will be little easy for non techy as googl is there to assist! @pollyb

  • @abigailgorton

I was thinking there was a way to choose which pics displayed, rather than removing the ones that you didn’t want to display, but either way works.

Although, if you load a lot of pics at one time, it could get a little tedious…

  • @ndonelly- Yes, the images in the photo strip on a (fan/business) page always display in random order (the most recent 5 images you’ve uploaded, and you can “hide” them as people explained above). Every time you refresh the screen, they will appear in a different order.

I imagine Timeline for Pages will be debuting soon, which will completely change the way things function on our business pages.

  • Does anyone think the timeline will take over the front page of our Facebook Pages? From what I’ve heard, it’s the Info Tab that will be affected. Sure will change things if it’s the home page!

  • ON yes, Facebook will force all pages into their new Timeline. The question for us is .. what will this look like and will be have to totally redesign our pages, tabs, etc.

  • @michellefontaine Word on te street is that it may happen as soon as Feb 29!

  • @michellefontaine the timeline has been rolling out for personal pages; I haven’t heard of a business roll-out yet but wouldn’t be surprised if this is next.

I think the timeline can be a valuable tool.

I implemented it for my personal profile. I find it not only appealing but it allows me to display milestones that I am proud to share with my children, family, friends and it’s even good for business should I choose to share it.

IMO, it is a quick and easy way to provide a quick glimpse of yourself and get a feel about anybody you are curious about without major effort.

  • That was very interesting because I did wonder about this also

  • Not sure if this has been answered yet as I am just passing through and havent had time to read everyones replies – so apologies if this is a duplicate answer but the way to add clickable links ot your banner images on your FB page is to add it to the description of the image so that when someone clicks on the banner images the picture is displayed int eh photo viewer and everyone can see the clickable link … :)

You can also create your banner images much larger than the default 97×68 pixels and add a large header at the top and at the bottom something like Click the link to get your free xxx and some arrows pointing down to make the link stand out even more :)

  • @caroldodsley That’s a good idea to work the call to action into the images.

  • hey Michelle – If you go to this facebook page (its one I created a few weeks ago) and click on the wall tab (you dont have to click like to be able to view the wall) and click then on any of the banner images you will see exactly what it looks like  https://www.facebook.com/mikeherberts

  • I have never seen this technique before! Thanks for sharing everyone! I’m going to work to incorporate this soon.

  • I’ve used the image-linking to create an illusion of a “website navigation menu” on the top of the image. Maybe this is what you had in mind: https://www.facebook.com/ThatSocialDude

    @clusterwebdesign @caroldodsley @michellefontaine @jamericanspice @dhsllc @casmccullough @localbusinessco @pollyb

  • Here is an article of what Fan Pages for brands can look like (so excited!) http://j.mp/xuLIpE. Also here is an example of a clickable links on a landing page http://j.mp/xbCfql

  • re: the top five images on a page… i’ve always thought target’s strategy with their images was pretty cool – because no matter in which order they randomly refresh, you still get the same continuity with half of one “target” connecting with the next.

    http://www.facebook.com/target

question – does anyone know how to allow fans to post photos, but NOT to have them appear in the upper five postions? (without the hover and hide method)?

  • I recently posted this article and free template. It may be of interest and help to everyone who wants to optimize their photo strip :) Of course, it may be moot after Timeline rolls out for Pages… but enjoy for now!  http://www.easylunchboxes.com/blog/a-better-facebook-fan-page-photo-strip-template/

  • @Peg Sousa – my photo strip pics are in their own album. When fans post pics to my wall, they don’t show up in the photo strip. Only my own uploads show up there and then I have to get rid of them (See my blog post above for more)
