Writer’s Block!!! (20 posts)

  • I’ve hit a serious case of writer’s block the last few weeks. I have 2 blogs. One is more personal (Mommy blog) and one is for my business…and I have been totally stuck on both. I was averaging 3-5 posts a week and now I’m stretching it to get 1-2. It’s hurting my business! I’m running low on new contacts.

What do you do to get out of writer’s block?

  • @kasondramorin I try to resist flogging my own stuff, but I wrote about this very issue a few weeks ago.

Six Sure Fire Methods to Break Writers Block

  • Thank you so much!

  • @kasondramorin I’m curious; when you say writers block are getting blocked on ideas to write about, what your take is on those ideas, or do you know what you want to write about but just can’t get it out?

  • @kasondramorin I find that when I have a hard time writing, taking some time to just read and comment on other blogs helps “unstick” my brain.  Plus you usually come across some good ideas in your niche while reading and chatting with others too!

  • Instead of doing a blog post, ask a question and also ask the same question on social media like LinkedIn groups and include a link to your blog … people love the opportunity to participate. Like for example, I asked the question, “What was the worst or weirdest interview question you were ever asked?” People responded for weeks. I think the best kind of questions are “which is worse, A or B and why?”

Another option is to repurpose your blog posts. For example, you could put a top 10 tips for doing such and such and just include an intro sentence and the top 10 list. You could link each tip to the related blog post.

  • @juleswebb It’s a little bit of everything depending on the day. Most days I have ZERO idea for topics. Sometimes I have a topic idea but no meat for the post. Rarely, but occasionally depending on how much sleep I’ve had, I just can’t find the right words. Not having a topic, however, is my BIG problem lately.

    @kristi-hines I may try that…thanks!

@kathybernard  I’ve done the link and ask for feedback/answers with no luck…maybe it’s a small fanbase issue?

  • @kasondramorin – this is what I would suggest:

If you don’t already have a gmail account set one up (I didn’t see Google+ in your profile)

Set up several google alerts (need google account to do this): http://www.google.com/alerts

set one up for your name – so you know when someone is talking about you. set one up for your business or blog name – so you know when someone is talking about your business or blog.

The two alerts above are so that you can either give appreciation and positive feedback when someone is mentioning you or do damage control if needed for any negative feedback.

Note: you may have to do negative search parameters if there are other Kasondra Morin’s out there. As an example let’s just say that there is another Kasondra Morin who is involved in and writes about horses you could set up your alert as:
    Kasondra Morin -horse -equine
This will filter out any results that are associated with either horse or equine.

Now you should also set up a couple of alerts for topics that pertain to your business or blog, subjects that you and your readers want to know and learn about. If you stay on top of the conversation that is already going on you can present your own take on things or get ideas on what you want to write about.

I would refrain from “over alerting’ if you get too much info coming in it can be overwhelming and then we tend to do nothing.

The other thing you could do is use Google reader http://www.google.com/reader/  and search for blogs that you see as good information sources and subscribe to them. This gives you an interface you can go to find topics your interested in from sites you regard as quality content.

This combined with the alerts should give you a stream of new ideas and information to write about.
    Cheers!
    Jules

  • @kasondramorin I just came across this fun infographic

    http://www.copyblogger.com/create-content-infographic/

It was one of links from this article: http://blog.kissmetrics.com/44-content-marketing-resources/

Though you might find some it useful.

  • Here are my tips:- use Youtube and search for videos about your blog subject and discribe the point of the video and comment on it- write about a book you read and how it relates to your blogs subject- relate news events to your blogs- compare your blog to another blog and see what you aren’t doing, and write about those things

and check this blog post about writers blog http://www.christopherspenn.com/2011/07/stop-talking-about-the-hammer/#.T3_kD2EaMrU

I hope some of it is usefull

  • great post – very useful tips and advice

  • @kasondramorin You might try writing in a different location (if you normally type at your computer, take pen and paper out in the garden….), posting images instead of words and inviting your readers to comment, or curating a list of blog posts that will interest your audience, too.

  • @debbielynnava Actually I have found that moving around can help. Thankfully, my laptop is back home (it was being repaired) so I hope that will help more.

  • I am just about to launch my business, and the one thing that I am nervous about is writer’s block…and I haven’t even started yet :) Ha.  There are some great tips here, so thank you @kasondramorin for starting the topic.  I shall be keeping these tips close to hand!

  • Hi Kasondra,

I know generating ideas can sometimes be a nightmare. I regularly read a blog on Sky Rocket SEO which recently published a post which has some fantastic, original tips:

    Hope this helps :)

  • Take a walk!Seriously, it works.

  • @kasondramorin   I have been also struggling with that dreaded block, lately, ignoring this, I have been going through my SME contacts and adding them 2 my Twitter, G+, etc. and hopefully next week my writing will return (also add a lot of photos when it gets tough…lol)…georgi

    @judithgotwald GREAT idea!

  • @kasondramorin  So many great ideas here :)

I would just add the old fashioned technique of free writing (maybe even with pen and paper!). If you aren’t familiar with it, free writing is where you sit down and just start writing *whatever* is in your head at the moment. Set a timer and continue to write until the timer runs out. No pausing – you must be writing the entire time. So, you might start writing something like, “I have a headache the dog needs brushing what is that noise who would be calling at this hour I want a beer can’t wait until the ibuprofen kicks in…” etc. It’s stream of consciousness with no punctuation or attention to grammar.

This is a classic technique for re-unleashing creativity and getting those ideas flowing.

I hope you’ll report back and tell us what worked!

  • @Kirsten LambertsenWhat a great idea. I have used it in the passed and I think it works great. For those not familiar with it you can use the book Accidental Genius by Mark Levy.

  • @kasondramorin When the words are not flowing freely, I take the day off from writing and spend some time reading and commenting on other blogs, hanging out in forums like this one or marketing my business. Sometimes a change of pace can make a difference.
