Wordpress – how to use both columns in theme with two columns (9 posts)

Topic tags: Blog, themes, Wordpress
  • I am using a Wordpress theme (BlueFreedom 1.0) with two columns for my website. Any content I put on a Post or Page populates the left column, but the right column is white space. What resources do you recommend to show me how to place content such as an Opt-In box or an image in the right hand column? Thanks.

  • @stanrobinson Use that other column for all your plugins and widgets, like posting your Twitter feed or showing your past columns, or displaying the Turkish exchange rate, or whatever strikes your fancy.

  • @stanrobinson Have the importance of content on your blog ‘travel’ from left to right and from top to bottom. The most important (your posts) on the left and other stuff on the right.Do not clutter the sidebars, just because you have them, doesn’t mean you have fill them up. Only add stuff if it adds to the quality of your blog.

  • Erik and Rogier – thanks for your insights, they are very helpful. It is good to know that white space is not necessarily bad.  @erikdeckers @rogiernoort

  • I usually have more than one window open, so I like a bit of white space that I can minimize away. I like the Networkings forum setup for 2 columns.

  • @stanrobinson I like to use the side bar for testimonials. That way I can have a different testimonial of each page.

  • Mac and Amy – thanks for your suggestions.  @richardmclaughlin @amyhallbiz

  • @stanrobinson In my sidebar (to the right of my page / post content) I use separate text widgets to give a short summary of what the site is about, subscription options (RSS, Twitter, Facebook, mailing list opt-in, etc.), a list of categories, recent posts, advertisements, and so forth. I’ve seen some sites with tons of stuff in the sidebar (which can sometimes be distracting users from your content) and others with minimal information so you have nothing to focus on but the content. Ari Herzog is a good example (http://ariherzog.com/) of someone who goes with minimalism to get readers to focus on content of sign up for his mailing list.

  • Kristi thanks for the suggestions. I will have a look at Ari Herzog’s website as well.  @kristi-hines
