Wordpress help for a person who knows enough to be dangerous (7 posts)

  • Good Morning All,

I have asked and posted this problem with the idea that I will get a bit of help quicker.

Now that the new year is here my media will not add a new 2013/01 folder. I thought oh well I’ll just uncheck the save media by date/month and all will be fine. Um no. I lost all my image links and still can’t upload images. :(

I have changed all my ftp settings to 777/permission to write. Still nothing
I deactivated some plugins hoping that was it. Still nothing.

I am not sure what to do. We are a small co-op and don’t really have the funds to hire a web person. I do what I can & usually I’m pretty good at figuring it out.

It was suggested that our webhoster may have to change the permissions for me. I have not heard back from him yet.

Any suggestions would be great. Thanks so much for any help.

oh here is our site if you want to see the issue: elfco.coop/wp

  • Hi Aimee, In most cases your folders should be set to 755 and your files set to 644.

I know a few hosting accounts may be different. (godaddy)

You can access and change your permissions through your hosting account or FTP. You can also check your image folder there as well.

If you need a quick tutorial I can show you how to change the permission settings.

  • @aimeewest You may want to post this in WordPress support (http://wordpress.org/support/) but in the meantime, be careful about your settings. Leaving everything open can lead to your site getting hacked / infected by malware.

  • @aimeewest having already gone through this issue — My “add media” button refused to work — and trying desparately to get a STRAIGHT ANSWER AND HELP from wp.org (which mind you there is none as the mods keep closing topics referring to this issue and others similar and telling you to go to the master fix it topic — DOES NOT HELP and is extremely time consuming) …. After saying all that, i got an easy simple fix from my awesome dear friend Melissa;s post “So WP 3.5 broke your Blog — http://barhamvirtualassistance.com/2013/01/wp-35-broke-your-blog/

Please read through the entire post first as you do have to add a line of code to a core WP file. But this fixed my wp and I have had no problems at all since I fixed it yesterday!

  • @glenandrews @kristi-hines Thanks I do know how to do that. I’ve been changing permissions and then changing them back as they don’t work. You are correct in I don’t want to leave my website wide open for anyone to get into…

@kimberlylosavio Thank you Kimberly. I have not tried this quite yet. I’ll let you know if it works.

    Thanks
    Aimee

  • Well I think I tracked the problem down to my widget… not sure how I’ll fix it yet. But I know that I will. I may just try uninstalling it and then re-installing it.

I wish there was a big arrow that “here! look here!” would make this so much easier :) Have a great night and thanks all for your suggestions.

  • @aimeewest, did you ever use Bullet Proof security and then remove it? You will need to go to /wp-admin/ and delete the .htaccess file. If you still have BPS, please update it. 0777 opens it up to all hackers. Which plugin is it?
